Vista 64-bit and ram usage.

So I've decided to go Vista. I remembering reading a thread on here saying that Vista is a ram whore, so I decided to do some research.

I found a couple of theories online about why Vista uses so much ram. One says that buying a computer from a manufactuer (Hp, for example) has programs that run "in the background" without the user being aware, so it makes the computer much slower compared to a custom made computer.

Another theory, one that sounds a little more believable, says that Vista tries to utilize all memory, otherwise it's wasted memory. I remember someone refering to RAM as cache, and in that sense it does make a little more sense.

So, what do you believe? My set-up will be a Biostar TForce TF720, AMD Athlon 64 x2 duo-core @ 3.0GHz, 4 gigs of G.Skill, 500GB Western Digital Caviar.

Vista quite honestly, does not use a lot of memory, it uses what 1GB? When 4gb costs you $30, its not a lot of memory or money to run it at all.

For decent performance with Windows Vista you need at least 1536 megabytes of RAM. I have no issues running Vista with 2048 megabytes of RAM.

Over 2 gigabytes of random access memory is generally overkill, but RAM is cheap. 4 gigabytes of memory is not expensive.

Right now I've got 57 process' running in Task Manager - Looks like 3 are from programs I've added. I'm using 31% of 4 Gb memory, and since I'm running 64 bit Vista, I'm left with 2.76 GB for programs.
