Vista 64bit and Ventrilo - Problems

I just put vista eltimate 64bit on this system (specs in sig). I am getting an error in Ventrilo that says it can't find my direct sound device. I downloaded the newest drivers, anyone got any ideas?
 
Look in the device manager for any yellow marked items under sound, video, and game controllers if that is still the same title or under sound. Right click on the item and choose the update driver option to see if a Windows search will find a suitable driver online.

Were the latest drivers found at MSI's support site? The download links for the Vista 32/64bit drivers are seen at http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=driverfile&dno=2474&i=1 for that model board.
 
Yep, thats where I got the drivers. I got the error with older drivers, so I jumped on the site today and downloaded those and still I am getting it. I'll try through windows, but I have a feeling this won't help.
 
Hopefully you are not going to find a bad audio chip on the board itself but rather simply a need to reinstall a fresh set. Don't blame that on Vista however since XP can see driver issues at times like any other version. Letting Windows perform it's own automatic search may be the ticket there.
 
Well I been runnin ghte comp for a week and it plays everything else fine. I'll prob let windows check for drivers tomorrow seeing as I am off to work now.
 
Usually it's some lame driver glitch where you see one thing work fine while something is missing for another. You may still end up seeing the message by Windows that the best driver is already on but not made active for some reason.
 
Ok checked under the devices, says everything is working fine. I let it search for an update online and windows says that it is up to date.
 
Vista

I am currently running on a window's vista os but i had been advised to change back to XP as many people say it is full of holes and can easily be attacked by hackers , could people with Vista leave opinion about it as i dont know if it is exactly true?

As figured you may be trying to run something not supported in the 64bit edition of Vista and maybe not in the 32bit edtions either.

Sound familiar if that is the same Ventrilo you are trying to use there.

As for colusus70's question there Vista sees more security then XP. But using something besides the Windows firewall like Comodo, Jetico Personal Firewall, or as used here Spyware Terminator since that offers a mild form of firewall as part of it's active protection feature would be the smart move.

Ok I turned off direct sound on my inbound and now I can hear people talk on vent.

So thats one problem down, but doing this gives vent a ton of error messages, oh well as long as it works.

Still I can't talk though. If I turn off direct sound and turn the outbound setting to microphone all people hear is clicking. If I turn outbound to high def audio they hear a static.

At least I have made some leeway on this so I can hear now. I don't know vent very well, but this info should help someone who does to give me an idea of what to do.
 
The main problem from the start is compatibility. The program was simply meant for the older 32bit versions of Windows. For a 64bit edtion of Vista you will need to start looking for an updated version or simply look at the Vista ready ones to see actual results there. You have to work with what is written for if not simply compatible with the newer 64bit edition there.
 
Not really sorry! You will eventually see them come out with a Vista version or find another software that will be Vista ready by looking around in that catagory. The problems you were seeing are simply due to not having reviewed the OS requirements before even trying it on a new 64bit let alone 32bit version of Windows. Old games surprisingly fare better on the new version over other things.
 
Nah I knew moving to a 64bit OS would cause some issues. I had to work out some driver quirks right away. But thats on an item basis and sometimes those items (be it sound cards or mobo's) don't sell too high and never get the support of drivers later on. But vent is a very widely used thing no matter what system people are running, theres gotta be well over 10million vent users. Granted I'm sure a lot are still on XP, just suprising no 64bit when Vistas een out quiet a while.
 
The 32bit versions of Windows readily see more support since 64bit is a rather recent item seeing that started with XP Pro 64 in 2005. Don't forget XP has been the predominant version for longer then any previous version since no 2-3yr. release of the next was seen like seeing 98 replace 95 and 2000/ME replace 98 despite the ME flop then bringing XP into the picture.

Vista is seeing more support there then XP Pro did however with MS plans of going strictly 64bit following the next version to come out in the 2009-10 time frame. By then software companies as well as hardware menufacturers will be forced to have more support inplace.
