vista - black screen with cursor

hi,

just turned on my vista laptop and it wont go any further than a black screen and the white cursor.

any ideas whats wrong? - tried reseting a few times but the same thing occurs

Is the hard drive still spinning and being accessed? I have seen Windows do this occasionally while it is still loading, or when explorer is having troubles.

Can you boot into safe mode OK?
 
What was the last thing you did on your computer before this started happening?

By the way can you go into the "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"???
