I have been have problems lately with Vista just shutting off with no error or anything just shutting off.

I was updating itunes and my iPhone when my computer just shut off (no biggy I thought it happens all the time.) When I restarted my computer I got a weird error GNU GRUB Error 22.

I researched this a little an it seems to be something with Linux, but I don't have Linux on the computer, just windows. So I tried doing a Windows repair and when it asks me to choose which OS I want to install it doesn't even show that I have windows installed. Please any halp will be appreciated.

System:

1GB Memory
Vista Ultimate
WD 750GB SATA HDD

If you need to know anyhtinng else let me know

Did you install any addon tools like EasyBCD? Some of the BCD editing tools for Vista's boot loader will see a form of Grub4Dos or NeoGrub.

Unlike XP Vista no longer sees a recovery console or the repair install option. There are steps for seeing a recovery console installed as a boot option however.

If you have a full install dvd for Ultimate there booting until you get to the Install Now screen also sees the option for bringing up the repair tools menu where you will find the automatic startup repair tool. That generally corrects any incorrect mbr entries as well as rewritting the boot information.

The screen goes black all of a sudden sounds like you never made a custom power profile where the display is set to never turn off, the hibernation mode is disabled, the hard drives stay running, etc. there. Have a look at the screenshot here to see the advanced settings area in the change settings option when in Control Panel>Power Options in order to see how much further you can go in creating your own custom plan.

You will need to get familiar with this if you end up having to reinstall Windows if the startup repair doesn't correct the GNU error like it should.
