Vista eplorer.exe error

I used to run Vista Ultimate Sp1 on my com. after about a month or so, vista finally gave me a bug that i could not fix. After starting windows for about 30 sec, an error window pop up saying that explorer.exe has stopped working. I would be unable to interact with any other program except for that error window. if i clicked "Ok" on the window, explorer.exe immediately restarted (together with any open program then). it was virtually impossible for me to do anything. I've downgraded to xp home. I was wondering if any1 knows a solution to this. Another question, is it really better to run games on Vista than XP? if it doesnt make a difference then maybe i would wait for the next SP of Vista before upgrading back.
here's my computer specs:
Core 2 Quad Q6600
Asus GT9600
2GB Ram
Asus P5K

games are currently faster on xp compared to vista atm
Could have been a dodge installation but other then that no idea

explorer.exe

Their are many reasons for explorer.exe errors from corrupt and/or incompatible software installation, hardware faulty including overclocking can generated ghost errors, hard drive bad sectors/corruption is another reason for this type of error.

To narrow it down:

Does this errors occur before or after other software is install after a fresh Windows installation?.

Do you have your computer overclocked?.

Check your hard drive for bad sectors/corrupt data.

On a Vista point of view, after service pack 1 it has improved gaming and other performance to match that of Windows XP, although I'm mainly a Linux users, I do use Windows Vista Sp1 for gaming and the FPS are on pair with XP now.

thanks for ur comments. i cant test out the errors now as i had to reformat my com and downgrade to XP after that bug. I just thought maybe there would be some1 else who faced the problem and found a fix (so that i can upgrade back to vista without worries). Although, i do know that my com wasnt overclocked and the error appears in safemode too. If im not wrong, the error appears after i installed a dvdrip software. But i uninstalled it and even did a system recovery to the first recovery point. but the error still occured. thanks again
