K, i have vista on my pc as one of the os, and the other pcs have xp pro in my house well ive sat here and messed with the file sharing on vista it shows in the other comps but when i try to access it, it says i dont have permission ne 1 help me

ive went through allowed file sharing, tried having it as both public and private, i can access the files i want from the other pcs but they cant access mine

Do you have password proteted sharing on? It comes on by default when you enable sharing in your network... Also it may sound stupid but ensure they are in the same workgroup...

enable the guest account, I imagine if you are running the home versions of windows you might need to have the guest account enabled to file share. That is a guess.

There is also a ton of issues with networking and vista, google it and you will see.

Guest wont work for sharing if he has password protected sharing on..

The guest account will still give read only access to the materials which are shared, and is required in XP Home in some cases because the actual architecture of the OS is different from the Professional lines on how it authenticates. Same may hold true with any home version versus business or ultimate. Can't say I have tested this theory though.

there is a program that will help its called networkmagic go to
www.networkmagic.com and all you do is install it on the two computers its compatable with vista xp, 2000 all the way back to 98 so just install it and bing bang boom click the files you want to share and your done they dont make it easy to share files or even networking on vista but this will take the confussion and hair pulling out of it for you

i'm having problems, i've boot'ed my PC in Vista safe mode and know what? ... it WORKS!
XP PC sees Vista notebook, and Vista doesn't ask for a stupid password when entering PC HD's.
Now im using Network Magic.
For those of you using Vista Ultimate, try going to administrative tools, and enabling administrative account, im using Vista Home Premium, i don't have access to that, even when i try to add this it fails - shame on m$

... very strange. Some people seem to have file sharing issues and some do not. I just bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium and I simply went to the "Network and File Sharing Center" from the control panel, clicked on the customize button next to the network, made it Private. I then verified that the network discovery and file sharing were set to On. I optionally set the public folder file sharing to have full control. I restarted my laptop. I have full access to shared directories on my other machines on the network as well as on my laptop with Vista.
