Vista gaming?

Is anyone else having a problem playing games on vista with GeForce video card? When ever i try to play any game i either lagg (6fps...), get a texture problem or get an error..its really annoying..I have installed all the latest drivers from GeForce's website. Is there any way to speed up the gaming and when do you think Microsoft will come out with a new update for games?

What make and model is the card there? Is that an AGP or early PCI-E model? With Vista and both 32bit versions of XP running on three drives here some old games have managed to see good installs and are running quite well. The main problem seen with the latest version is the other applications that are designed for 9X-ME, 2000, and XP. They fail to run on Vista often.

I have a Geforce 7900GS for PCI26. The games im trying to play are: Counter-Strike, BattleField2942 and BF2. My card should run those games flawless..

I have a lowly 7300LE and I can play BF2 on full. If there gets a lot of stuff going on it will lag. Or if I go online. Thus why I need to upgrade..

Thats why i don't understand why my computer sux. Every game i try to play it laggs like crazy...I only get 30FPS in Counter Strike...on my 5 year old piece of crap computer i get a stable 90 to 100 fps....

Did you edit any of the "Compatibility" settings? and did you download the Vista drivers from nvidea's website or are you using the ones of the CD?

With the MSI Radeon X1300 Pro 256mb PCI-E card here I've been seeing some 70fps in FEAR as well as the good results seen in Half Life 2 which also uses the Source engine. I suspect you have a software conflict going on there. If you have any antivirus programs installed make sure those are shutdown before running any games. Those and firewalls are known to raise havoc with games.

I think the anti-virus might me the problem because im running AVG and i dont think thats supported by vista. ill give it a try.

AVG hasn't been a problem with games here while autoloading with Windows. But the difference seen in different games may be a factor. I've never AVG interfere with any of them here. Programs like Norton on the other hand are "resource grabbers" that can hamper things. How about other programs installed? You may simply have a software conflict there or a problem mainly now seen with sound! I had to setup the Media Center in Vista to get the EAX effects since Creative still only had beta basic sound drivers there.

i uninstalled AVG and my Sound Drivers and my all my games ran at full settings with great fps. So im pretty sure its the sound because of what you stated about AVG. What can i do about that tho. I had all the latest drivers.

ARe you running onboard or a pci type sound card installed onto the system? Here with the Audigy 4 Pro model Sound Blaster the beta drivers were intended for the intial RC1 beta version of Vista. I ran the Ultimate selection when originally setting the beta release up and using the same drivers still seen at the Creative supprt site.

Ive seen good results as far as having AVG still running when running a few games installed on the Vista OSed secondary master drive here. At first one older game remained too dark due to not being able to adjust the gamma setting in the options until I went back and forth a few times one day with the slide control. That suddenly saw the screen brighten up fast!

When setting up the Media Center now seen in Vista the option for Sound Blaster enabled EAX effects there. That has worked for sound. But while Half Life 2 ran as smooth as silk Episode One saw freezeups in some parts out of the clear. Fortunately Vista has a better crash control feature now seen to end or retutn to program if not choosing the log off option.

You may seen either an original incomplete install of the sound drivers or something happened to them. A good clean reinstall may correct the problems you have been seeing. Since Vista has only had a few short weeks for home use and gaming it may take awhile before a good set of drivers are available. You didn't have to remove AVG however. All you had to do there was use the msconfig utility in order to keep it from starting along with Windows. It generally doesn't see conflicts like other are known for.

I am currently using Onboard Realtek ALC883. I think i know what the problem was. I had a TV card installed into my pci slot and when i opened device manager the TV card was listed under the sound. So i was a little confused about that so i looked at all the drivers i have installed and it turned out that Windows automatically set my TV card at my default sound card for some odd reason. lol So i took my TV card out and reinstalled all the latest Realtek Vista drivers and my sound is working great.:) Now to test the games...

  • Counter-Strike - 60~70 FPS
  • Battle Field 2 - Ran great on highest settings.(don't know how to check FPS)
  • Battle Field 2: Special Forces - Runs good on Low settings but is unplayable on Highest settings.
  • Day of Defeat: Source - Does Not Run. I get this error: "hl2.exe has stopped working"

The tv tuner card here used for video captures from analog sources has been a burden with Vista due to needing a newer version of the softwares like Cyberlink's PowerDVD, PowerDirector, and PowerProducer. Neodvd won't even go on. Despite the problems with EP1 the Steam engine seems to load up normally with the usual ads for newer games out.

You may want to move the card you took out down to the second or third pci slot. On many oocasions with XP the resource sharing problem came up. You may have seen something very similar there with the tv card. One review on Steam games tested on Vista is seen at http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2090574,00.asp

Oh i see:)
Microsoft needs to get with the program. lolz
Do you know whats wrong with my Half-Life2?
I searched Google but i couldn't find anything useful.
That guy on that link you posted had the same problem i'm having but he doesn't say how to fix it. :(

SInce Vista just came out for the home user it's going to take time like any other new version to "work out the bugs" so to speak. So far I haven't had a chance to run Counter strike: Source or Half LIfe even Metal of Honor: Allied Assault to see where those stand. Prey is currently on the agenda now that I went through EP1 to how that would run. Two lockups in two different game maps for single player there.

When do you think Microsoft will release a Full update to enhance/improve everything? or will they continue what there doing now, update little bugs at time.

It took three years last time for an SP2 to come out. Already there are mini updates that have been added in the last two weeks. Over time you will see driver updates for the newer hardwares as options at the update page. They most likely will come out with an SP1 in a year or two unless they decide on a 2nd edition? har! har!

errrr. i was expecting it to be a few months. lol i guess not tho. Thanx for all your help.

If you leave the auto update setting enabled it can cause some problems at times during gaming sessions when that kind of cuts in with the popup messages. You can either assign those to a prespecified time of day or pay regular visits to the update page. A large service pack like SP2 wouldn't be anything you will see right with any new version of Windows. This goes back to the OSR2 release for 95 for the initial 32bit support seen in the Fat not NT based 9x-ME line there. 95 PlUS! came out later followed by 98 having a 2nd edition. 2000 saw four service packs for that version. Some word but without any confirmation was discussed about an SP3 for XP? We'll see!
