Vista Hibernation Problem

Hey! I'm having a hibernation, sleep, and standby problem in Vista. It seems that evertime it wakes up from any of these the screen has millions of little lines going accross is disabling me from seeing whats going on. Lines with colors to represent whats suppose to be there. Please help.

I have a dell inspiron 1501.

My first questions would be do you have to put the computer to sleep? The best resolution would be not to do this at all as vista still has a lot of issues with this on most pc's.
