Vista: I want to kill everybody!

I am kidding of course, but seriously I'm getting angry. I've had Vista loaded for a while, a fresh install, and thus far I have been happy with it, no real issues. Suddenly a bunch of my programs will not open, I get a message "(program name" has stopped working" and then vista searches for ways to fix it, which it never finds. So I can't open a lot of my programs without seeing that. The programs worked on Vista before but suddenly don't anymore. I just assume this is a Vista issue because it's the easiest scapegoat although it may not be.

Hope someone can help,
Thanks a lot.

install, update, download anything right around when it started?
and by anything i mean *anything* at all.

or did you goto a porn site that is cramed with virii or other malware? :P

yeah no porno lol, I did install dvdsanta, which is where i first noticed it wouldnt open and got the error and then i noticed a bunch of other programs didnt open. I subsequently uninstalled the program completely.

Some example apps? Most of the Vista stuff i have either worked right away or didnt ... nothing's "rotted" into incompatibility

Nero DVD creator, not the burning rom, just dvd creator
Tag&Rename, this I am sure worked before
dvdSanta
Spy Sweeper Installer

nothing with any of these programs, opening them immeadiately opens an error stating that they have stopped working, even though they never even started. there may be more I have yet to discover.

One thing I have been pointing about Vista is do nor go by the compatibilty lists some sites have. While games go right on and run desktop apps, video capture and video playback softwares even included in a bundle installed or tried to install and failed. Those that made it failed to run later. Yet they are on the compatibility lists?

The software/hardware manufacturer for a tv tuner/capture card released a Vista driver for use with the ... what? software? That was a joke!

(At least I still have XP running on the primary drive. :D )

worth to try..

hmm.., the 1st thing that struck on my mind is that you are using a type of memory that doesn't match to your vista (check the PC)<i'm using Kingston KVR400x 1GB> (ultimate? or what ver?) or below vista min requirement <hope not cause you have to install more RAM to your MOBO> :( that cause your vista to stop responding, 2nd thought is that your mem setting in BIOS
isn't set right, try 1:1, else the program isn't compatible to vista, <kept me remembering when i install mcafee 8.0i in vista and it can't load the OS, makes me to install vista twice hiiiiiiiks, all D%#%@ credit to the one that create more 'safer' vista>

I wouldn't try running Vista on any PC133 while it should still run on older PC1700 memory if needed. What model Thiinkpad do you have there? The product information will show whether you will have problems meeting the minimum requirements for Vista.

its a thinkpad t43, 2ghz, 1.5gb ram, 40gb hdd, i think it should be alright, im not sure how to get any more information about my RAM other than how much I have, according to the thinkpad website its vista compatible.

One review on the T43 is seen at http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2285 You will note that is speifies 512mb of DDR2 memory. Vista compatible? That has more to do with the recommended amount to meet the minimum requirements whether it is value or performance, DDR or DDR2 doesn't matter as far as the OS is concerned.

Before jumping one version you may want a look over at what each version has included or lacks compared to the other editions. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/choose.mspx

The Basic only requires 512mb while the other versions will require 1gb of system memory. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/systemrequirements.mspx

Its important to note that the Home Basic version lack the AERO GUI, and you can install ALL vista version in a system with 512MB ram, it just lags like hell. :P

Well I'm not going to toss 1.5gb of memory to find that out! :P Gee: If I grab another XP3200+ I can get the old case running again and that will still have 1gb there. I guess I'm stuck with the Home Premium. :D

You'll note that the other versions state 1gb or higher while the Basic lists 512mb. That's due to all of the prebiult systems that came out with 512mb as the better of two options. The lower price saw 256mb on too many. How often do you see office workers running systems with 2-4gb of ram installed? That's what MS was looking at there more then anything. Yet the Business version needs 1gb? "Time to upgrade companies!" MS shouts
