That is soooo cool! I'd love to try it sometime even though I don't think I could take advantage of the entire system it would still be cool. Maybe a triple boot later on...xp/vista/linux....maybe

i dunno if beryl/xgl is the same but i just installed beryl on a dell optiplex gx100.You dont really need nvidia series or ATI stuff. nah it's just a matter of understanding its installation.

hey simon, i wont agree,its no pain at all. I also thought the same at first. But after reading at the ubuntu community i got beryl/xgl running. you just have to add a beryl repo in your synaptic package manager. Then install it. I did that on my work pc who has an intel video adapter.

The thing is running xgl on X can be a HUGE pain. You have to make entries on your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, install the Linux driver from ATI or Nvidia, you can install it using the online repositories via APT, YUM, RUG, Yast, etc.
Beryl window manager crashes on my linux rig every time it launches and i followed the instructions from the wiki to the T. After many posts on the beryl and linux forums I have found that a lot of people had to tweak the hell out of it to work with some ATi cards.
I am running a x600 PCI-E card in my linux box right now which totally should run it but it crashes. Compiz also crashes.

hhmmm..very strange. i have never had beryl crashing on any pc i installed on. It once crashed at a friends house cos he was processing too much. he had Gaim open along with GIMP,RDP,Rhythmbox music player..running wine and also vmware...all on a single desktop. he then tried rotating the cube and BAM....FREEZE....but apart form that everything's ok

I installed the stable version of beryl and the snap shots and it crashes every time on my ATi card. I am willing to bet your experience is mostly with nvidia, which seems to be a lot better because nvidia has a better linux driver out at the moment.
Yup, I have tried running beryl with and with out xgl enabled, its a no go on my rig. Maybe I'll try some more next week when I have free time

I have tried many different ways, and i edited my xorg.conf file several different ways. I am not saying it is impossible for it to work on my system I am just saying from what I have read it is a pain to get it to run on ATi cards.
Now, I also installed beryl on my nc4200 HP laptop that has an intel 965 express video chipset. It worked for about an hour and then crashed X, so I just reverted everything back and it seemed to work like it did previously.
beryl is still in beta development so there is definitely going to be issues and it won't work out of the box on every system. However, once it becomes a stable package I can see beryl window manager being bundled in OS installers as an optional out of the box. This is partially due to the manufacturers of 3D cards not writing decent linux drivers. Once they have good kick ass native Linux drivers beryl should run with out a hitch on just about any system.
