Vista laptop crash when watching movie 2x

Ok, so i was watching an old dvd i found (Gothika) and a few minutes into the movie my computer crashed. It restarted and vista blamed Nvidia graphics drivers for the problem. neither windows update, hp, or Nvidia had an updated driver. I decided to try and finish the movie, and as it was about to end, literally less than a minute left, and it crashed again, same problem as before. What confuses me is that i have watched hours of recorded tv with no problem but this is the first dvd i watched. I have now switched my card from balanced mode to performance mode to help take off the load (less quality, more performance), but does anybody have any other suggestions?

It could be the DVD software you are using. Check their site for any updated patches you could download.
 
I did consider that, but vista specifically said it was a nvidia driver, i even debugged the crash dump file and found it to be a nvidia driver.

Although i just watched another random movie (sky high) and it didn't crash once. I think it might have been an overheating issue? the only thing i changed was the fact that the graphics card is set to performance instead of balanced.

(I have this setting in my 8600 where i can change it from performance, balanced, and quality)

I used windows media center to play the dvd, and i don't think there is any update for it. If this becomes a problem i can use another one, i just like media center because i have the media center remote.
 
Try copying the movie onto your hard drive and seeing whether you still have that problem. That'll narrow your search for the faulty equipment/driver/software.
 
i never thought about that...... when you say that, you mean using something like dvd decrypter right? I have done that before to put dvd's on my ipod, but it takes an hour or so to do it, so thats an option i hope i don't have to take.

I just watched another movie and no crash, so i think it might have been the overheating from having graphics on balanced instead of performance.
 
Well, the only reason I recommended copying a movie to the hard drive is to see whether the movie (file, or media player) itself causes the problem, or whether it's the hardware (DVD-player) problem.
 
True, and i have been going through that kind of process. I just thought it would be the graphics card so i tried that first, everything seems to be working. If it does happen again, i will take your suggestion and copy it to my hdd. Thanks everyone for the advice, i really appreciate all of it.
