My aunt is having trouble logging into her computer. She says that when she types in the password, a welome screen keeps poping up and then it will tell her that the user name or password is incorrect... And no, she did not create a password recovery disk... she thinks that maybe her computer fried during a storm (yes, i told her that was very bad). The only thing that ges me is, her son can login just fine... the only problem is that her son is not the administrator... someone please help by letting me know what we could do to fix it... last option would be to reformat the hdd i guss... thanks!

it has something to do with her account. Something must have changed or something and she can't log in.

I the only suggestion from me is to reformat.

But don't, someone else might have another suggestion.

Ok well it sounds like her password has changed or something so will try fix that
first way of trying to change password would be log in as guest
Go start, type cmd in the search dialog box, when it comes up right click on cmd and go run as administrator. (if this does not work just try running as user)
in the cmd window type
net user
this should show all the user accounts. now type
net user administrator *
(you can change "administrator" with the account name you are attempting to change)
Now it should say enter new password. So enter a new password.

If this does not work then retype "net user administrator *" and when it asks for a password you just press enter twice to reset the password to nothing.
Now if the password is set to nothing you should be able to go to control panel, users and change the administrator account password because it should not ask for a password to change the password because there is no password and if it does ask for a password then just leave it blank and enter new password.
if for some reason you was able to reset the password but can't enter a new password through control panel then i suggest you restart the computer and try logging into the computer as administrator without entering a password.

That is the first method to attempt, there are other methods that work but this is the first method i recommend trying
if this doesn't work will try my other method

good luck ;)

I am trying this as i type... when I type in net user DMV* it says
The syntax of this command is:
Net User
[username [password | *] *} / ADD [options] [/DOMAIN]
username [/DELETE] [/DOMAIN]
username [/TIMES:<times | ALL]

this may be because I signed into another user's account and i dont remember how to get back to c:\

Okay, i figured out how to get to c:\ and it took me to the place to change the password, It did not let me type in anything... so i tried hitting enter twice, and it said system error 5 has occurred. Access is denied.

umm. if your any good with computers try this. open up the case. there should be a battery on the motherboard. Take that out. Then put it back in. Restart and try again. The battery erases things done to teh account. But it wont erase like documents or music. Just log on screen.

Cheers.

ignore that, it's total nonsense. That doesn't do anything with the operating system. That includes your user accounts.

Thanks for everyones help... but i figured out what the problem was... SHE WAS TYPING IN THE PASSWORD INCORRECTLY THE ENTIRE TIME!!!! Oh well thanks anyways...
