Microsoft Corp. on Thursday finally attempted to clear up confusion over licensing of Windows Vista for power users who rebuild their PCs on a regular basis. But the answer from the software vendor did little to placate some users, who are still upset about Microsoft's one-machine transfer policy for Vista.

According to Microsoft spokesman Mike Burk, Microsoft users who frequently change the hardware configuration of the system running Vista may fail Vista's new Software Protection Platform software-validation feature more than once. If they did, they would be required to purchase an additional license or use Microsoft's support services to activate Vista on a newly configured machine. http://www.infoworld.com/article/06/10/26/HNmsvistalicensing_1.html

The above is partial from the 2006 article regarding Microsoft's updated product verification and licensing terms for "one machine only". This one goes into how that effects those who regularly upgrade their systems.

Sounds like it's illegal since your saying your downloading Vista...

And Vista is only "supposed" to be used on one PC, but you can install it on more. However you can only activate it once I believe before having to call Microsoft.

I just finished installing all programs that run on Vista here for the third time after the 3rd installation of Vista on the same system. The second was during the attempts to use two different freewares available for editing the Vista boot manager in order to add two installations of two different versions of XP after the first installation saw one version removed. The VistaBootPRO and EasyBCD programs found both failed to add but not rename or rearrange the OSs installed.

The second drive was then wiped to remove all BCD logs and backups created by those two for Vista to freshly detect and add both XPs. Even an article written on how to manually use the bcdeditor was a joke. The third installation not only added the primary's boot.ini into it where both XPs saw an entry but was reactivated without need to call MS. There was no hardwares changed during this time since XP Pro was installed on the sata after the first install of Vista since it had been where Vista now is. That was also reactivated. For another system another disk or a new license as the article reports.
