For old hardware you're better off with 7 than Vista. I would recommend looking at 8, but I know it won't even install on some old hardware.

hi folks

i have the option to buy a computer with either win vista or win XP

so which one is better?

thanks

Before buying anything,be sure to check if you have some very important programs to make sure that they will be compatible with Windows Vista.
If they work only under XP or older, you can always run virtual XP,but that is sometimes not the best option. Some programs do not even run properly under virtual XP and instead they need to run on pure XP installation.
But those kind of programs which do not run correctly on virtual XP are rare anyway so I am sure you won't have a problem running them under virtual XP which will run under Vista.

As for the security...that word "security" is overrated if you ask me...
There is no reason to not use an operating system just because some company will not support it anymore.
I never needed support from Microsoft anyway...
Support is only needed for those users who are absolutely 100% illiterate with computers.
If you want security then don't do anything stupid with your computer such as watching porn web sites and running EXE files which will do God knows what...
Because if you do a lot of crap on your computer then EVERY operating system will NOT be secured and that will result in contant operating system reinstallations.
I have not reinstalled XP on my main UAC computer 1 since 2004. and today is 28. of February 2014.
And guess what?

It runs so damn perfect like I have JUST installed it 1 minute ago.

I would have the same result with Vista also.I assure you. ;)

As for the "updates"...Microsoft has released TONS of updates since XP came out and so many bugs are fixed so XP runs just great!
I for example only have SP1,SP2 and SP3.All other updates which came out after SP3 I never installed and guess what?
Every single program, game and everything else just runs fast as hell.

Besides...why on Earth would you care if new updates come out if your system works perfectly fine and nothing needs to be fixed in the first place???

I know people to who their XP machine works perfect and then they install so many updates for no reason JUST BECAUSE THEY CAME OUT......
And later they complain that their system now runs slow as hell...lol...
If you REALLY have a PROBLEM which you NEED to remove THEN install that ONE update ONLY FOR that problem and not all 1000 updates for no reason...

Same applies for all Windows operating systems...

Also if you want to play games which need DirectX 10 or higher then you will need to use Vista since XP unfortunately does not support higher DirectX version than 9.0 C.
But...there are just TONS TONS TONS of games which can run just fine under DirectX 9...so the choice is up to you.

If your hardware is weak and you are afraid that Vista will run slower, but you STILL want to get Vista ANYWAY then disable all those Vista aero crap, configure options properly, increase pagefile, disable all services and processes you do not need running, use programs such as MEMTURBO or MZ CPU ACCELERATOR...blablabla...and Vista will run perfectly fine.
Most of these things I wrote will not need to be done anyway since I am SURE that Vista will work just fine to you.

If I was able to run Vista on my super old computer under such damn great speed (after everything I did) then I am 100% SURE that it will run even better to you.

Look...both XP and Vista are perfectly fine operating systems...at least to me...so it is REALLY up to you what you are going to choose...
I would choose XP,but that's because I have many tools which need Windows XP in order to work correctly and which I payed a lot for.

If you on the other hand do not have any specific tools which you payed a lot for and which only work under Windows 2000 or XP then you have nothing to worry about and you can run Vista. And again...like I already said...you can always use virtual XP from Vista.
Plus...you can always use XP compatibility mode from Vista.

So according to everything I wrote here XP AND Vista will work just fine to you.If I was able to make Vista AND Windows 7 to work just great on my super old computer then Vista will SURELY work perfectly fine on YOUR new computer since today you cannot even buy a new computer which is weak as mine. They are at least 5 times stronger...

You are worrying too much...

Also if you don't care about DirectX 10 (or higher) games and the things you will do work great on both XP and Vista then take what is cheaper...IF the money is really important to you.

Also I want you to take a look at this video:

So...
At the end of the day...
You will take what YOU decide...

Cheers!

we have to assist a person like this that did not mention what type of pc he wants to buy ? second hand pc? The Hard ware? we have to assume that he wants to by an old pc! if he talks about XP or Vista!, let me tell you if this is true! then,he should go with vista instead of Xp,this is the facts, anythingelse is just shooting in the dark, and if you are an experienced guy on Computers you should know what advice should be given to a person like this ! you been there, you were not born with computer knowledge, and you know that most people that post here for help know litle about it, and want go the easier path, So keep it real.

Until OP responds listing what hardware he has, there really is no answer here. If the hardware is somewhat new and he has enough memory go with Vista. If its older hardware and 2gb of ram or less go with XP. As Okedokey has said, as long as you watch what you do and install an antivirus program such as Avast and use malwarebytes the user should be fine. I ran XP for years without updates past SP3.

Support is overated. Really if you have a proper router, firewall and antivirus combined with good internet and software habits, XP will be fine. If you rely on ANY OS for your security its a problem. The security of XP is overstated, and a bigger problem for enterprise. A home user, with SP3, fully updated and AVAST with malwarebytes, a good back up routine and some software and browsing discipline will not have a problem.

Vista, is not sufficiently more secure now, or even in 12 months time to warrant its slow, resource hoggin ways...

I will be short: I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAID HERE.ESPECIALLY THE BOLD TEXT! :good:

Hey!
Ivtec!
Leave me alone!
I tryed to explain him as short as I could in order to help him to decide what OS he should take. It's up to him at the end anyway...
So leave me alone will you?
If you wanna talk about how my posts are not useful (blablabla) then we will do it in private messaging...

Jesus...

And the answer is Windows XP. There is NOTHING about Vista that is better. Period.

True...
Well...
Unless if he wants to play games which need higher DirectX than 9...:p
But in that case I would recommend him Windows 7 at least...UNLESS if he has no choice but to go with Vista ONLY. :D

This is EXACTLY what I keep telling to other people, but they just don't listen lol. Most of them think XP will stop working when Microsoft stops supporting it xD !!!

You guys supporters of Xp are may be right but you forget to say that most people don't know nothing about software and all they want is a system that works without them to worry about anything. i myself know a little but have no patience to workout problems, i like everything done for me,that's why i would never keep an OPS that doesn't give you support,so shouldn’t people with no experience on this stuff.

You don't need anything more on XP than on Vista...

It's harder to get used to linux (although some distros are almost Windows like) but yeah, this is off-topic.

(It's harder to get used to linux) You must be joking?

Give someone that isn't very computer savvy a Linux distro and tell them to install and configure it the way they like it. Then let them tell you it's easy. Don't expect them to, cause they won't.

Yeah, exactly.

Though on older hardware, it's a good option if you can live with it.

Yes i can live with it and i couldn't be more happy, i have an Intel I5 CPU and installed the latest Ubuntu13.10 then upgaded to 14.04lts and it's so easy to do , there are tones of codes at ubuntu forums that you just paste in the terminal, it couldn't be any easier a cave man can do it, all for free. And for me to say this it's because is the truth. cause i'm one of few people that don't like too much work when it comes to install and config.Software,so much so i prefer to reinstall my system when i have a litle problem, probably easy to fix.
And i'm not talking about malware and virus,in linux i go to all shady sites and do all kind of downloads without worrying about malware.

Okay, since OP hasn't answered and this is getting ridiculous I'm closing the thread.

ivtec, you're more than welcome to have opinions, but not everyone has to share the same opinion you do. And also watch your language.
