Vista Premium. The best...

spyware, adware, virus and all that other jazz to keep my computer safe. What is the best free software out there? Also, if windows firewall isnt up to par is there a free one out there too? Can you offer me any software that will keep my computer safe and running well? I am not a big fan of trial versions, versions of software that have features blocked or programs that are just crap.

For one you were advised on a few freewares already like AVG 7.5. Spyware Terminator has it's own mild firewall while most the free versions like Jetico, comodo, and a few others are still XP orientated. The bulk of the adwares and other things are far less with Vista's other new securoty features added in that blocks out more of "uninvited guests"?!

The reason i'm asking is because i have 15 days left on my free trial of mcafee that came with my computer and im looking into alternatives early so i wont be scrambling when the time comes. I dont have money to spend on virus software but i also wouldnt like to have my computer crap out on me. I looked at spyware terminator, Avast and AVG but i cant figure out which is the best overall. Im not in the know about these types of software. So i was wondering, in your opinion what the best overall software would be for someone running windows vista premium. I know they havent come out with many. Also, is there anything that this "best" software doesnt cover that i will need. I dont go onto innapropriate sites and rarely play games. Suggestions welcome. Sorry for starting a new topic on this PCeye i just wanted to get more opinions and didnt feel like digging up an old topic.

Also, are you famaliar with the SBC Yahoo! internet security program? Is it decent, i have sbc for internet but dont know if when they come out with a vista version i should download it or not.

With Vista and XP alike AVG and ST have been doing their thing without problems. I give AVG the edge over Avast while others will disagree on that. I ran Avast for a period to see if it would be better. I soon went back with AVG and Ad-Aware SE Personal at that time. ST is a more recent freeware seen and much newer. But it cathes what Ad-Aware misses. The three work pretty together.

Presently the new Ad-Aware 2007 beta has ran into a glitch or two on Vista while working well on XP. But this can now be said for IE 7 as well. When installing Firefox on Vista after a reinstall it knocked out IE 7 where it won't connect. Others are complaining about crashes when browsing? ut oh? Microsoft has to get busy again!

Also, is windows defender any good? I dont mind the email virus scanning because if i dont know somebody i just delete the email, but my main needs are virus scanner, adware, spyware and all that other ware that slows down your computer and messes it up, and maybe a firewall. I checked out avast, avg and the other ones mentioned and avast looked the best but like i said, im not too knowledgable in the security department. Im just trying to get all this sorted before the time comes, you know?

Why do you need more than one program though? If avast or avg run both virus scan and spyware blockers why do you need both or a seperate spyware? Also, are these better than mcafee or norton?

Those two are mucho better than either Norton or McAffee. You only really need one of them, but one of them with Windows defender is just a good idea. Dont forget a good firewall also(ZoneAlarm) . Im not sure if there are versions out of those for Vista yet, either.

Ok, well i decided to download avast. It says it has a mild firewall, would this be enough for just casual browsing? Is windows firewall better? Would norton internet securities firewall be better than that?

One of the main reasons for having more then one program is for different types of adwares, spywares, viruses, and other types of malwares. When one misses something the other may pickup on it. The Windows Defender like the MS AntiSpyware that proceeded are far from the best. I definitely give AVG the edge over Avast in many ways from having alerted on trojans while being disabled at the time from starting up with Windows.

Avast's mild firewall is nothing more then the new antiphishing feature seen in IE 7. Meanwhile viruses and other "bugs" are not the only thing that will slow a system down over a period of time. The occasional use of a good registry cleaner will cleanup anything leftover from software uninstallers. RegCleaner is a great one for this. Another freeware for cleaning the crap off of your drive mainly now useless temp install folders is CCleaner referred to as the "crap cleaner". Those can be found at the two links here.

And the zone alarm, just the firewall is better than the firewall offered in the norton internet security 2006 software? That is the only other software i have used in the past so, comparing avast and zone alarm, which ive downloaded now to it would help me determine how good these programs are because i liked the norton.

Spyware Terminator has it's own mild firewall. Another one that surpasses the Zone Alarm free version and seems to work in Vista is Jetico. Comodo is another one but limited to XP presently. One dimwit site with freewares like AVG, Avira anti virus, links for Avast and better yet Trend Micro's latest tools is found at http://www.trustmeher.net/freeware/free_anti_virus_tools.htm Once you get past the annoying popping sound of popup ads being blocked there's some good links there.

The information and download link for Jetico is found at http://www.jetico.com/

It looks decent, but i also dont know about freeware. if it passes your inspection, i already registered(for free of course)so all i have to do is download it.
