I haven't update my laptop for like a year now. Now that I have a router, I wanted to update it thoroughly. After updating it for so long, there's this Vista SP 1 update in the windows update, I install it then ask for a restart then I left it restarting.

I didn't know what happened after that but when I checked it, I saw weird numbers and letters(I googled it but i forgot what it is now) and something like a scanning with registry keys, after googling the weird letters I saw a same problem but I don't have the Vista Media disk so I can't repair it,

the problem is that when I restarted it, it goes through (START WINDOW NORMALLY window) and then load, then goes back to those weird letters. Then I experimented on it by using system restore, but then I got stuck on the "FINALIZING FILE RESTORE" which probably the last phase of restoration.

is there any other methods to repair it?

the only method of repair that I have is to use System Recovery and I don't know if it will work, but I have a lot of important files in there , I used it as a storage.

I'll be hard-pressed to think of the last Windows/service pack upgrade I've done sucesfully. This is why I refuse to update computers and simply do fresh installs...

Without knowing the exact numbers or what the screen is saying, it's difficult to say what the actual problem may be... What kind of computer do you have? Might it have some kind of restore partition? Sometimes these have their own repair options that'll keep your files intact.

Now the computer in question is a laptop and you have a desktop as well? Assuming they are new-ish, both may have SATA. You could easily pop the drive out of the laptop into the desktop and copy the files over for backup. And for future reference, it is always a good idea to make backups before doing any kind of updates. These problems happen much more than people realize...

if i were you i wouldnt download and install it using windows update as it will go straight into your machine and if you ever need to reinstall you will lose it and have to download it again and again, instead go to MICROSOFT DOWNLOAD CENTER and manually download it, and instead of installing it select SAVE then choose desktop as the destination, then it wont install on your machine straight away but will go to desktop where you can save it to a usb stick or a disc, then you will always have it and wont have to download it again, once you have saved it just click it on your desktop and it will install takes a little time to install as its a major update, can i also suggest when your getting service pack 1, that you also get service pack 2.
