Vista Speed vs XP Speed

Hi,
I have two speed related questions:

I have a Intel Core2duo T5600 1.83 Ghz 1MB RAM, laptop, I just bought it few months ago, which operates with Vista. But from the start, it was always slower than my previous pentium 4 which operated with XP. My new laptop is working even slower recently.

1-Other than cleaning up space in the hard drive, uninstalling unused programs, cleaning temp internet files, and disk defragmentation is there anything else in general that I should do to speed things up? It is slow all the time, both internet and opening word excel etc...

2-Also, is Vista Causing my computer to be slow as it needs more resources than XP? If I downgraded to Windows XP, would that make my computer much faster versus operating with Vista? Or may be my RAM is not enough?

lol, you meant 1GB ram not 1mb, and yeah 2GB will do for vista, i downgraded my laptop to xp myself cause of the lag, if i were you i will downgrade.
but that's just me other members may tell you to keep it and go through a long walkthrough of "fine-tuning" vista

If you got 2G of RAM, you'd probably see a fair increase in performance. It's not that bad on my laptop once it gets going, but it does feel slower than even my old Sempron 2800 under normal usage. Downgrading to XP isn't a bad idea as stability also seems to be an issue with Vista, but here's a word of warning. Find all the drivers and confirm from other sources they WILL WORK with your laptop before attempting anything. I believe some HP hardware almost only works with Vista...

you will need at least 2gb of memory to run vista, 1 gb is not going to do it

sorry for jacking the topic with a dumb question: is there such a thing as too much ram? more specificlly, is 8G ram over doing it for windows vista 64 version?
