Vista takes forever to load?

Hello,

my sister bought a Compaq last week with 1ghz Ram and Vista home premium included, it's the first time I see vista, and It takes like 2 minutes or more to load ,, and we are thinking about installing XP..

-after the little bar that indicates it is loading a black screen comes up and stays black for two minutes or so, and then the desktop comes up.

oh and windows runs pretty fast,, so far.

One the desktop here Vista seems to reach the desktop a little faster then XP does. But it is also a recent installation with a new registry. The long boot time sounds like an installation problem more then it just being Vista. 2gb of ram also can help smooth things out for the new version.

But the lag sounds more like a possible bad install of Windows where some files were either not fully copied to the drive or didn't fully install. The same version of Vista has only seen a few problems with the lack of drivers gradually coming out now instead of being available when Vista was first released. But XP and any other version goes through the same when it first comes out. CompaQ on the other hand has never been a great performance machine but a low end make.

Vista does have one new option seen when booting from the recovery/installation disk of choosing to auto repair problems seen with booting. Vista will repair itself there. When booting with the disk look at the bottom of the screen that says "install now" to the "repair" link and see if choosing the repair startup option helps any.
 
hmm,, It makes sense, I think I'm going to try the repair tool, It came with a Vista upgrade cd,, hopefully it is in there.

I remember I cancelled some shitty installations that come up when you first start the computer,, with you know, shitty softwares that HP wants to sell you etc,, I cancelled all that,, its like a wizard or something,, but it froze and I had to restart,, maybe that had to do with the lag..

when you boot up a store bought computer it will take awhile for the first time because it is just finishing up the installation of windows.
 
After the first few system restarts the OS would be finished installing unless other optional features are still pending setup like those HP "goodies" that you saw ads for. The items like prepackaged softwares added along even with the basic installation of Windows are still HP not MS. If one of those saw a goof you could try the msconfig and unchecking anything unnecessary there in the startup group.

If the cpu was toast the system would see problems even after reaching the desktop. Something is stalling Windows from a normal bootup there. A bad dimm would be more likely if your problem isn't from a weak cap in the supply. The largest demand on power is generally seen at post time.
 
My friend has that exact computer, and his took a very long time to load as well. He tried everything with no luck. It now runs XP, and flawlessly.
 
A friend has a 939 board with a VIA not nForce or XPress 200 chipset that takes longer then average with XP to load. Boot delays are not necessarily OS related. That system runs an AMD64 Atholon 3200+ 2ghz cpu where the post tests are what takes the time up on the board there. No external devices attached either.

On the CompaQ there the Windows splash screen has already been past suggesting either the installation problem mentioned earlier or some program that is loading along with Vista being the cause. This is where the msconfig utility could be a help if no hardware is involved. Software related is how to look at this. Once Windows is up the problem evaporates?
 
thanks for the responses,, I did the msconfig thing and deleted some unnecesary HP goodies/softwares that were being loaded when initializing windows ,, like 5..

It loads faster now,, but it still takes its time.
