I think that i heard that you can now install XP on a MAC computer? I was wondering if you could do the opposite and install Tiger on a windows system as a second or third OS.

I am running XP now, upgrading to Vista (32 bit) in a week or two, will install linux as second OS. Just wondering if after i did that i could also install tiger on the same system.

Thanks

Also, a poll, please vote for which OS you think is best.
Thanks again

1=XP
2=Vista
3=Linux
4=Tiger

Triple boot should work. Though, it would take up a bit of space on the comp. Would there be any reason to do so? Or just to tell your buddies that you have all 3?

well, i guess it is just more to say i did it.

i could probably just do two and that would be ok.

I am definitly doing Vista, which would be better, linux or OSX? for my second OS.

How much space would it take exactly, just curious?

and why not? what should my primary bee? if Linux is will i have any compatiblity issues.

What is rong with Vista?

As of right now Vista in its beta stages can still be potentially unstable. Also, its always a good idea to wait until the first service pack or major update for an OS comes before you get it. The debut release for any software always has problems.

What is wrong with Vista?
At the moment, quite a lot, driver issues, stability problems, still quite a few security loopholes to be patched. Couple of glitches still there. Its just not finished yet, if you actually want to do work on it then dont use vist, either get handy in linux or use XP, i suggest linux.

i would love to run linux. I am just skeptical, would there be any compatibility issues? like could i run programs and play games on linux just like i could on XP?

Out of these following OS's which one should be my primary and which one should be my backup

Vista
XP
Linux
OSX 0086 or whatever it is called

I don't know a lot about this so anyone please feel free to corect me.

The way I understand it windows XP uses the NTFS file system and linux uses a diffrent file system that is not compatably so you have to have programs made for linux to work. but I might be wrong.

PS
I would use XP as your main OS untel vista is released out of the beta stage.

Yeah linux rocks!

I am pretty sure, but not 100% that it is illegal to put OS X (Tiger) on any platform other than macintosh. Read the EULA for specifics

You can install windows xp on a mac, I have done it, and its not hard. You can run 3 OSes, its been done already and you can tripple boot with a boot loader. Vista runs like crap, I have had all the beta versions, and MS keeps dropping things to push their release date closer.

In linux you can run an application called WINE, this is a set of APIs that allows a user to install windows based applications. Some things work great, don't expect games to run like they do on windows if they actually do run.

For Tiger, don't expect any kind of support for their OS on any non apple hardware machine.

As for which OS is the best? It is really debateable. I use and work with all three of those: Windows, OS X, and Linux. Each has their advantage/disadvantage.

If you want to play video games really windows is the best platform to run

**EDIT**

Oh and I forgot to add the fact that Linux and OS X now have virtualization technologies that allow them to run virtual machines of other OSes.

For example parallels can run a virtual windows xp machine with in OS X. Really there is no need to dual boot a mac considering this. Also with things like crossover ( http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/ ) you can install windows applications. I have personally installed IE 6 SP1 on a mac running OS X with cross over, and it worked fine. I also ran putty.exe which is a favorite ssh client of mine.

To give linux credit though, they did virtualization first, not that really matters or anything.

that's the reason why so many people use XP--most consumer games/software are built for XP or OS X
and with the OS X x86 thing, unless you have a motherboard that is intel-based with GMA 900 or 950 graphics, it could be potentially unstable
