just got all my parts in and thought I would ask you guys if the driver issue with the 64bit OS's has gotten any better lately. I have at the moment both XP PRO in 32 and 64 bit. Before I go and buy Vista and waste my money ,I'd like the opinions of the forum. Thanks
The advice for running a newer 64bit version of Windows would be similar to what you have seen with the XP version. Vista being the product still lacks in the 32bit area for drivers and new versions of softwares at this time. The 64bit concept will take longer then the original move into 32 from 16bit since NT was already that before 98.
For too long 32bit has dominated the software market with 64bit still being an infant in some sense. The eventual move into 64bit will come about over a few more years for that reason mainly. At present some items will state that the 64bit versions are not supported. First go to the support sites to look over the updates for hardware to see if they have them available when selecting the OS. That will tell you there if any are to be found.
i hear that there isnt as many drivers for 64 bit , i think u shoud wait for the SP . but over all ultimate is awesome , wait if u want , but i think its the greatest thing ever
Most likely if a company has drivers for vista they will have it for both 32 and 64bit since 64bit vista is getting to be a popular OS, i have not had any problems finding drivers for mine exept for my PCIe wireless card but i found some from a different company that worked..(but on the linksys site they said they just have not released the 64bit drivers yet )
The only draw back that I'm going to have I guess is that alot of the older games I play just won't work with either the 32bit or 64bit Vista. That's one thing that's keeping me from buying it . I will buy the OEM just can't see spending all that money for a box. I'm building this setup this weekend thats why I was asking?

Yeah, if your going to buy vista go ahead and get 64bit since it will be more (future proof) me and many others here with 64bit have had no trouble with compatibility or driver issues, the other only difference is that you dont get "customer support" with OEM, but how often have you ever called microsoft for help? never? ... its worth saving ~$140
I started a thread some months back on games and softwares found that would run in Vista with only the beta drivers out for the Audigy 4 Pro sound card on the present build. Surprisingly some of the older games like Return to CastleWolfenstein and Soldier of Fortune I+II along with Half Life, HL2, Fear, and Prey saw no problems while Metal of Honor: Allied Assault was one that simply refused to install.
This is on the 32bit version of Home Premium. The Ultimate version was sold out fast at the time. Three times I bought the OEM version of XP with one being the SP1 release and later SP2 for the Home version. For building your own you can save big money not going for the large paperback book and cardboard retail carton. Just make sure the OEM is for system builders and not any for proprietary application like HP, Dell, etc. there.
