Vista-update 3 of 3 loop on startup

My dad's laptop starts,says update 1 of 3 0%.Stays like that for 2 mins.Restarts,says update 3 of 3 0%.And it just keeps repeating:mad:.Trys to do the update soon as the window logo & sound is done on on startup.
 
Find out what updates are trying to install and see if the updates are possible already installed by going into add/remove programs and find out what updates are installed. Give us the KB numbers for the updates.
 
I have no idea what the update(s) are.It will not go to menu to sign in like normal.
I tried:
Startup repair-Failed
System restore-All 17 points failed(Says catastrophic error with some code)
Recovery manager-Can't do it because my father doesn't want to lose anything saved.
Windows complete system restore-Can't find a copied cd right now.
Command prompt-I don't want to get into this,im not relly an advanced user & would probly make his laptop worse.

I don't know what I can do without losing any data:confused:
