Vista vs 7

Assume that both systems are the same and they are only fresh installs running normal boot, nothing turned off. What kind of memory consumption would one expect from the two? My Alienware after a fresh install uses .94gb with vista 32bit and my 7 x64 is 1.5gb. Now first of all I am curious about 32 v. 32 and 64 v. 64 but does that seem right to have that much difference in vista to 7 regardless of the 32 bit vs 64 bit or is that where the difference is?

Thanks all!

Windows 7 uses slightly more RAM in general however the performance is great over Vista. Of course the best thing to do is disable unnecessary startup items and services via the msconfig utility. (hit start, type msconfig and hit enter)

You should check hide all microsoft services and uncheck the rest except for your antivirus.

If I remember right, they both scale RAM usage to ho much RAM is in your system.

If it helps, when I had Vista, I had 2GB of RAM and it used around 1GB.

that too. windows 7 likes to use 1gb when i have 4gb in and when i had to use 2gb it tried to stay under 1gb usage.

What if we compare 7 and XP? Which one is better?

7. In your sig it says you have 3.25GB of memory, so I assuming you have 4+ but it is only recognising that much because you are on a 32 bit OS. If that is the case, then getting a 4 bit version of 7 would be better than getting a 64 bit version of XP to be able to utilise the full amount of memory because the driver support on XP was terrible to say the least.

I would say 7 as well because it has more features. DX 10 and 11, which XP doesn't have, support from Microsof still (I am fairly sure the XP updates have stopped or will be soon) for years to come, better compatibility with future software releases, has XP compatibility mode should you have an XP program that wouldn't work with 7 (of which there are very few), has better memory management, looks better, is much easier to use (That is probably preference, I think Vista is easiest to use because they have ~0 wizards, which for some stupid reason started coming back in at 7, they are extremely inflexible and take control from the user)

You should first ask yourself:

FOR WHAT WILL I USE MY COMPUTER?

Answer yourself on that question and you will know which one to use ;)

By the way if you have 4 GB of RAM and do not plan to play the most modern games which are using DirectX 10 or 11,XP will be just enough.By the way...Windows Vista works great under 512 MB of RAM lol.I tryed Vista under 9 years old computer that has 2.4 ghz,512 KB of CACHE and 512 MB of RAM and Vista ran great.I even tryed few games and it works like charm lol.You do not need so much RAM by the way.Windows XP,Vista and Windows 7 all runs great under 512 MB of RAM.It all depends how you adjust options in your OS,drivers and programs or games that you are using/playing.

Cheers!
