Vista's search feature not working

On my laptop, which uses Vista SP1, the search function in the start menu doesn't seem to work correctly. It only pulls up data files (Word, Excel, pdf, etc). For example, I used to be able to type in "defragment" and it would find Windows Defragmenter. Now it doesn't display programs & such at all. How can I get this back?

what happens if you click on "search everywhere" right above the search box? i typed "defragment" and nothing showed up either, but it did show when i clicked search everywhere.

or just press enter and itll open the same window.

Thanks. This worked, although the results displayed differently. Originally, results displayed above the search entry area as letters were typed in. Now, they are displayed in a separate pop-up window after clicking search everywhere. As long as it works, though, it's OK.

The search feature on Vista SP1 is gone again, even when I type files I KNOW are on the PC. I've tried "search everywhere" but it has stopped returning results - just "no files found to match your search."

Can this be reinstalled?
