VPN and VNC connection

This week I plan to use UltraVNC to connect to my one computer that has a high-speed Internet connection using dialup. My problem is, I need to create a VPN connection from the dialup computer at my house to my spare at a friend's house on a high-speed cable connection, (so I can check on stuff I left running on it) but I want a free alternative to get a internet hostname other than to subscribing to dDNS.org. Is there some possible way for this to happen? My dialup computer has a static IP address, so I think if I can give a static IP address to the computer I'm trying to connect to, I can ditch the VPN idea and use uVNC exclusively.

Both computers are running Windows XP.

Any ideas?

teamviewer connects using high encryption and gives you the option to connect via VPN so maybe that could work for you. no static address or gateway/router/firewall configuration is required.

If you dont want to use a Dynamic DNS service then the computer youre connecting to will need a static WAN IP address. If that computer sits behind a gateway/router then just forward the port(s) to the said computer and connect via uVNC with the static WAN ip address.

I will try TeamViewer. How do I assign a staic WAN IP address? I'm really eager to learn all about networking. Any articles?
