VPN disconnects when phone locks/sleeps

Let me start with my school's wifi sucks. It has gotten to the point that we need to use VPNs for simple things like iHeartRadio.

When I use my iPhone 6 on iOS 9.1 to access iHeartRadio or TuneIn through VPN, I like to keep my phone in my pocket with my earbuds in, but when I lock my phone the VPN disconnects, with several different VPN apps as well. I tried keeping my phone unlocked as it was in my pocket but my leg rubbing on the phone as I walked was pressing things on the screen and screwing around with my music. Is there a way to prevent the VPN from disconnecting when the phone locks? This would be very useful. Thank you.

What do you mean your school WiFi "sucks"? If it has poor performance, then a VPN doesn't change that. Or are you talking about them blocking the services you want to use?

Usually they disconnect to save power, as it drastically reduces battery life to have a constant connection to the VPN server. It sounds like you are using those free "VPN" apps in the app store. Try setting it up within the iOS settings using the server information, I believe they give you an option to keep alive when the screen is off, I know Androids do.

I just set up my own manual VPN to a California server. I'm adding other servers to rotate if needed.
