VPN Question

OK, so I know there are a lot of open source VPN softwares out there and I'm interested in trying them. However, I don't know if a VPN is really right for me.

We have a wireless home network with good security measures already in place, firewall, WAP encryption, etc. I don't have a workplace or office as a "secondary" place where I'd need to connect from. I basically connect from home and that's it.

I really like the enhanced security a VPN provides, but would I really be better served by one? If it adds more security and flexibility and not too much hassle, I'll do it, but not if it doesn't really improve the status quo.

Thanks:)

All a VPN does is allow you to connect to a remote network through another network. Then everything you do is as if it's through the VPN'd network. You don't need it.

EX: Say you need to connect to your workplace server but can't access it from your home network. You use a VPN to connect to your company network, and then you have access to the server.

Some people use a VPN if they are connecting through a public wifi for security. Using a tool like Firesheep, a malicious user on the same wifi network as you can easily snoop on your browsing session and even masquerade as you on sites that require a login.

But if you are just at home browsing facebook or youtube then you probably wont need it.
