Vundo Virus Help

Computer started running slowly and lots of pop-ups started bombing me, earlier in the week. No idea how it could've happened, but it did. SpyBot started noticing it, and the downward spiral was on. I'm on dial-up, via AOL, and AOL has been crashing, every time I sign off. Very strange. Thanks so much, in advance. This thing has been a bloody bastard, to get rid of. Here we go...

Hello, please run ComboFix and post the log.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

In your next reply i will need:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

After you run ComboFix you will need to run SuperAntiSpyware to pick up the pieces of Vundo that ComboFix leaves behind. I recommend SuperAntiSpyware cause I know it's very good at removing Vundo, but Malwarebytes should work just as well.

I cannot run ComboFix, because I use AVG 8.0 Free. The product itself says that it cannot be disabled. I don't want to uninstall the damned thing, of course. Any suggestions? I've never used ComboFix, so all of the "THIS COULD DESTROY YOUR COMPUTER IF YOU DON'T DESTROY AVG, FIRST!" talk has me worried.

You don't need to uninstall avg to run combofix. It just tells you thats it best to disable it while combofix scans your system. Let combofix run and post the log that it displays back here.

Thanks very much for the input, regarding AVG/ComboFix. It's more than greatly appreciated. Here is an update, followed by the logs.

1) I turned off Spybot and SUPERAntiSpyware, before running ComboFix. When ComboFix finished, though, Spybot was turned on with it. I needed to allow 6-10 actions, in order for the program to finish running. Spybot now seems no longer to be running.

2) When ComboFix finished, the desktop and taskbar didn't restart. I waited 15 minutes, and nothing happened. I then used the Task Manager to manually start up a program. When I did that, everything reappeared. I've needed to reset Firefox as my default browser, but most everything else seems fine.

3) I haven't yet turned back on AVG, Spybot, and SUPERAntiSpyware.

4) Here is the ComboFix log:

A few things you need to do. Please do another hijackthis scan and place a check next to these items and then click on fix checked.

You are running a very outdated version of Java. Please uninstall any and all older versions using add/remove programs and install the newest version here.

You also need to uninstall viewpoint manager via add/remove programs.

Please rerun Malwarebytes program but make sure you update the definition file first, the latest version is 1780 dated today. Then post the log back here if it catches anything. Also, its not a bad idea to run Superantispyware as well. I've seen it catch things that Malwarebytes won't catch, post the log that it displays as well.

After doing all these fixes, please do another scan with hijackthis and post the log back here.

PS.... You need to use either AVG or Mcafee so please uninstall one or the other.

Thank you so much for your clear advice, johnb. I'm sorry that it's taken so long to follow up on it, but this dial-up connection really hampers as much as updating Malwarebytes, or what-have-you. Here is where we stand...

1) As far as performance, the PC is still running very slowly. It often seizes up for several minutes; it always comes back to life, but it is VERY, VERY, VERY slow. Both the Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware scans took around or a little more than two hours, to finish. Because of all the uninstalling and such, I've had to restart, several times, and it usually takes 20-30 minutes for the computer to "warm up," when it starts back up. At this moment, though, there are no pop-ups! I consider that much a victory. They've been going away for a while and then eventually coming back, during all of this, so they may be back, sooner than later.

2) The restarts have been troublesome. Each time, I have gotten the same errors from SpyBot, which has been crashing during shut down:

Access violation at address 74E50DE8. Read of address 74E50DE8.

and

Access violation at address 004709DD in module 'TT.exe'. Read of address 00000010.

Also, both Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware have been crashing, during shutdown. You'll see in the logs that only SAS detected any more problems, but after prompting it to reboot (I had to, to solve all the problems it noticed), it crashed. I had to manually restart. Again, both programs have failed to shut down without issue.

3) AVG keeps noticing something recognized as "Trojan horse Generic12.BSFH". It's been noticed four times, over the past 12 or so hours. Is it maybe a legitimate program for some reason being interpreted as a Trojan? I'm not sure, but it keeps showing itself, either way.

4) Here at the requested logs. Sorry for so many words. Thanks in advance, once more! I so appreciate it!

Please list your system specs as far as what processor you are running and how much system memory is installed. It's possible you are overloading your system if you don't have the right processor or enough system memory.

You still need to uninstall an antivirus, which I would recommend keeping AVG and uninstall Mcafee. You also need to remove any item that says viewpoint manager or viewpoint media player in Add/remove programs. If you system specs is within reason then most likely its time to format and reinstall windows.

I already uninstalled McAfee, before my last posts. There's nothing in Add/Remove, either. I'm not sure why it would still be showing up...? Can HJT do anything about this, perhaps? I'm only semi-proficient, with this stuff, and this one has me stumped.

I'm running an Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz processor. Here are the specs, if relevant, from CMD>set:

PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE=x86
PROCESSOR_IDENTIFIER=x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 3, GenuineIntel
PROCESSOR_LEVEL=15
PROCESS0R_REVISION=0303

I do have a lot of media (massive picture folders and my CD collection, in particular), on the computer. The internal HD is 34.2 GB, and there are only 4.06 GB free.

As usual, thank you so very much, for all the help. This forum has really been a wonderful resource.

Well, it has now been several days, and neither Vundo nor any of its allies seem to be bothering me, anymore. Thank you so, so, so very much for all of your help.

Unfortunately, though, the computer is still running sometimes impossibly slowly. It is particularly bad at start up (takes between 20 and 40 minutes, even though I've disabled the vast majority of start up programs) or when coming out of standby. Once it settles in, it is pretty much okay. Maybe once or twice an hour, for about five minutes each, it gets pretty slow--the mouse isn't very responsive or it gets laggy, pages take an eternity to minimize or maximize, audio will still play for a minute, or so, after closing a media player, etc..

I don't think that these problems are to be addressed in this sub-forum, though, so is there anywhere in particular I should take them? Should I even take them anywhere, or should I put up and shut up? Either way, thanks again. I'll be sure to recommend this forum to friends or family who're having PC problems.

Please run HijackThis and choose Do a system scan only.

Place a check next to the following entry:

  • [*]O20 - AppInit_DLLs: vqobzc.dll
Please close all open windows except for HijackThis and choose Fix checked

Please reboot and post a new HijackThis log.

Thanks, ceewi! Here's a quick update, followed by the log:

I have uninstalled AOL as completely as I was able, and now have a high-speed connection. I have also disabled SUPERAntiSpyware from loading at start up, and this has definitely helped with the "warming up" issue. Just starting it manually has made a really big difference. Things are still get laggy, sometimes very much so, but not as often or for as long. Again, thanks.
