w32 brontok

Dear sir/ madam

allow me to make an annoucement.
This past hour i've been fighting this viscious worm off my network.
there were 3 infected PC's (with the same worm)
all 3 pc were running norton 2k6.
But for those who don't know i will alert you.

norton CANNOT, i repeat CANNOT remove this worm. the dialog box pops-up saying worm removed but when i go the the infected directory it's still there.
so i called upon my removal tools. they are:
Kaspersky 6 and AVIRA antivir 7.
i removed norton made a scan with kaspersky and there were more, which norton couldn't even see in a full scan.
after the full kaspersky scan more than 12 infections were found all 12 treated. (note that i didn't update kaspersky, but what if i did, probably there would be more)

so i removed kaspersky and installed avira, updated it.but no infections were found. this goes to show that AVIRA and Kaspersky is very powerful.

I am not disriminating norton or anything or comparing which is better or not, i'm just alerting you guys if something like this happens know what to do about it !!!

thoughts welcome !

Solo antivirus claims to ba able to remove the w32 brontok worm with their 30day trial plus add protection against new worms not out? http://www.srnmicro.com/virusinfo/brontok.htm

Sophos offers removal instructions at http://www.sophos.com/support/disinfection/brontok.html

One site that offers manual removal instructions also refers to Symantec, Trend Micro, F-Secure, and McAfee? ! http://www.mycert.org.my/advisory/MA-104.032006.html

The real point is understanding that a new bug can come out that can infect a system despite which software is actually used. Often it will take a more specialized remover you have to download separately and not point fingers at one brand or another.

You can always ask to have this thread moved to the security section. There you can post a log for someone to look over to see if you still have anything lingering.
