W7-32bit on 64bit system.

A friend of mine - who knows of my discontent with Vista - phoned me recently regarding something that he thought might help me out. It seems that he knows someone who was hired to do away with items from a business that went under. Apparently, everything was slated to go - meaning that he could also keep anything that he desired to.

Well, it turns out that he found an unopened OS package for Windows7 (32bit). As he already had it on his system, he asked my friend if he had wanted it. My friend is more than content with XP, and thought of me.

I am so sick of Vista that I don't know what to do, and would have - normally - jumped at the opportunity to take advantage of this. In fact, I am STILL considering going that route, but need to ask a question. My computer is an 8Gig system, now running Vista64. It has been given to my understanding that a 32bit OS can only take advantage of 4Gigs max, and I was wondering what others might do - if for being in my shoes. As it is a new, unopened package, that Windows7 OS can be registered, and such. I just need to know if the advantages would be worth not having the use of half the RAM in my system?

I can't afford to buy the W7-64bit, at this time, but would sure like to move myself away from my present, horrid Vista OS.

What do you use for your system for? A normal user won't use more than 4gb of ram anyway. However, if you use memory intensive applications or high end gaming you would be better off getting the 64 bit version so you could utilize more memory.

Thanks for responding, John.

I am not a gamer, but my computer is used quite a bit as a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for my songwriting & music creating efforts. In addition, I am an extreme hobbyist photographer who is really beginning to work heavily with Photoshop. That's about the size of it, for me :).

Do you feel that I might fare well with W7-32bit?

The only thing I can suggest doing is look at how much memory you are using when you are doing the most intensive thing. If its more than 3gb being used then you should stick with a 64bit OS. Open the task manager to see how much memory is being used.

Good enough. Thanks much.

I have concern that even though sealed I think an OEM version. And since a business I suspect the license key was already activated. Retail includes both 32bit and 64bit versions.

So you could run into activation issues. If you do not it would still be illegal I believe as an OEM not retail copy. Ignorance is not bliss. Saying you don't know if it was activated is not an excuse. If in a business it came with a system and was activated.

Photoshop and audio creating SURELY doesn't need so much RAM lol.Even 1 GB of RAM is more then enough for the programs like Photoshop unless you are creating some ULTRA CRAZY staff which does God knows what lol.
