Looking to get my first laptop and have it narrowd down to 2 laptops that are both around $800

I have listed them below with the specs, let me know what you think and also below are the top things the laptop will be used for.

1. Internet

2. Some minor gaming, maybe WOW

3. Watching movies, mainly DVD and DVD-R

I do like the bigger screen on the Dell but I love the look of the pearl white Vaio. Also, the Dell comes with a FREE 2 year in home warranty and 15 months of FREE McAfee Anitivirus.

500 GB SATA 7200 RPM HDD

8X DVD/CD Rom

Web Cam

backlit keyboard

audio 2.0

6 cell battery

Dell 2 year in home warranty

15 months free McAfee Antivirus

Sony Vaio VPC-CW17FX/W

I'd get the first one, but if you get be sure to uninstall mcafee and use something else and also uninstall any other crapware dell will definately put on there.

i cannot suggest because of gaming. One thing though. i have a Toshiba laptop with a 17" screen. Keep in mind there is nothing portable about it.
its like carrying a suitcase. Great screen though. use mostly at home and visiting friends and family. not for school.

Thanks for the advice

I have sen both and the Sony is really nice looking and small and light.

Does anyone know about the sound or battery life of either. Also, how much better is the Dell Graphic card?

I also was considering a Mac Book for $899.99 but that seems steep just to own an Apple.

The only thing I don't like about the dell is the 720p screen. That's pretty sad for a $900 laptop.

The video card however blows away the one in the sony, but you did say you only want to do light gaming, and the one in the sony will do wow just fine.

battery life in the sony will be better.

Thanks

So is the Sony alot better for movies?

Also, I found a Gateway with a 17.3 screen at BB and I love it.

It has an Accelerator 4599MHD, will that run WOW ok? This laptop is only $599

id get the sony as they look amazingly good, so what its got one inch smaller display, its a laptop after all, it be no problem also its got blu-ray drive and ddr3 which is better than dual channel ddr2 in the dell

Well, you didn't give much info on the gateway, but i can tell you right now it's gonna get crappy battery life, and be a pain in the ass to take with you anywhere. Even my 16" is a pain to take with me places. I end up taking my netbook as it's so much nicer to pack around, and leave the laptop unless i know i'm gonna need the power.

sorry for the late reply but i think i saw (excuse the spelling) the one your on about and ive got to agree with speedy its too big and bulky, get the sony trust me you wont be disappointed, ive got a vaio and they are really nice, dont forget when you get it remove all the crap they throw in it ie nornton and sony vaio programs

if you want to run games, get a laptop with better power not battery but computer power. that was my first mistake. I played heroes of might and magic 5 and even when I used the worst graphics I could barely see it. it was so slow. bad mistake. I ended up having to uninstall it. Vaio is nice looking, and you get to remove the bloatware for free however I'm not sure if that's still available. But some of their laptops aren't worth the price.

I did about 2 hours of research and found the card in the Vaio is a tier 3 card and the one in the Dell is tier 2.

I have a Dell Studio 1555 (see sig) and I love it. I think it would fit your needs. It is fast, has a great picture, and came basically crapware-free. I got the full HD screen (1920x1080px).
