Wake on Lan (WOL)

Hi, I would like to set up my laptop to remotely controlled.
I have no issues connecting to the laptop through remote desktop. However I can't seem to get WakeOnLan to work properly.

I followed this tutorial and downloaded the WolCMD.exe from http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/wake-on-lan-cmd.aspx

I created the .bat file as per instruction, but after running the bat file nothing happens.

So here is the configuration:

I have a desktop PC on main level house that is connected to a wireless router(DIR-615)

In my basement, I have a DI-604 router connected by a CAT5e from the upstairs router acting as a hub to connect my PS3 and the laptop being used as a server.

I think one of the major issues is that I set-up port forwarding on DIR-615 UDP port 9, but I didn't know what to set up on the DI-604 router. or do i have to port forward anything on the second router.

Also just to be clear I set up the check-box options on the laptop to allow WOL an Magic Packets.

Any ideas to try would be great.

Thanks

You shouldnt need an additional application id think, just need the bios to be able to accept the magic packet.... there are android apps for sending a magic packet to a machine, just have to be sure your router has port forwarding enabled for the port that application is talking on.

hmm, I enabled the bios and applied the appropriate permissions to the network controller to allow wake ups on the laptop.

Also set up the port forwarding on the DIR-615 router to the laptop

But I can't get it to work. How do I send the magic packets without using third party software?

I would like to use the main PC to start up the laptop.

Is the second router causing an issue because I am using it as a hub in the basement so I can hard-wire all my devices?

Thanks!

Well I have made some progress,

I thought I enabled the bios to allow WOL, but all I enabled is Network Boot, which I am thinking is not the same thing. Because nothing happens when I send the command to wake up.

So I tried something, I put the computer I am trying to wake up into sleep mode. Which doesn't shut down the PC, it just a "light" shut down.

The WakeOnLan command works when the computer is in this state and only in this state, won't work when computer is shut down or hibernating because network card is disabled during this period, but during sleep the network card is enabled still.

So it works but not ideal, I am going to post a thread in the motherboard section seeing if my bios can be updated. if the network card can support WOL, then I am thinking that the MB can support it, just needs a BIOS update if possible.

Network boot only allows the system to boot to a network server. You need to find the wake on feature in your bios and see what the options are. Should see lan, keyboard, mouse.

I have very minimal options in the bios, there is nothing that i can see the would enable Wake features...

I'll check again..ill take some pics with my cam and upload, maybe I am just being blind...

Thanks

Just saw your other thread, understand you have a laptop not a desktop. A laptop won't have the wake on option you are looking for, a desktop would though(custom built desktop, not store bought)

Ok, so a Laptop BIOS will not support Wake options from the off position, but if I put the laptop in sleep mode, I can wake the laptop? Seems weird, but ok...

Not so bad, Thanks for clearing this up for me, been spending hours searching and trying different things to get it work lol, and not one website or blog said that a laptop will not support WOL!

Appreciate your help Johnb35!!
