Yeah but who wants to put those up they have that little task bar at the bottom....and icons.

ya see, the post your desktop isn't useful, this lets people share good pictures, art or screen shots.

there is a significant difference between desktop, and wallpaper tough..

why because of the toolbar, the post your desktop thread is basically a show us your wallpaper thread. thats going to be pretty much the same thing as what people would post here. The only difference may be that people can download the wallpaper for themselves here. However that can be done quite easily in the desktop thread by asking the poster where they got their wallpaper from.
