here's some ideas so far... any input is welcome :D

mobo - thinking either asus rampage x48, or gigabyte x48 DQ6.. not sure which'd be best yet. not even sure what x48 is.. i just know it's the thing to do?
cpu - have a 2.8 pent. D, should i upgrade it? looking for this to be a vista system i guess,,,
ram - 5gigs.. 2x2, 2x512 - DDR2
psu - gonna pick up a 500w
hd's - 1TB sata for storage, 80g sata for windows & program files.
audio card - i dunno yet.
video card - xfx 8600 gt PCI-e
dvd/cd - think i'll upgrade to one real slick/fast burner.
memory card reader - needs to have this.. the camera card, smartmedia cards..
keyboard & mouse upgrades
case - i'm gonna jump into the light thing, might even get into liquid cooling.

i'm new to hardware.. i've been living on a pc for the last 10 years, but i've never been hardcore about hardware. so if you haven't noticed, i'm a little naive or whatever.. wanna help :P

i've built pc's from leftover parts and stuff, but i wanna finally build my 'supercomputer' - do i start with that motherboard?

ps.. i'll spend what i need to spend, but i'm not into paying top dollar for something that's new today/outdated tomorrow.

fair question..

mostly for just bouncing around the internet, watching movies, and playing tunes.. but i do play the games every now and then, and i dont like xbox or playstation. i want to be able to play pretty much anything i feel like playing.. looking forward to the PC version of GTA4. playing doom 3 now..

i mostly want to be able to have a ton of windows open/progs running/the works.. seamlessly. i don't want to worry about overworking it. i'm so tired of my computer irritating me.. so something that's smooth 100% of the time is a must. and the faster those progress bars move the better.. i like FAST

let's say i'm not too concerned about what it's gonna cost.. pretend i'm insanely wealthy

can someone kinda cliff notes me on the x48 thing... ? is it a smart move, or is it just hype...

i'm gonna start with the case first, and the motherboard right after that... does it really come down to gigabyte and asus.. if ya wanna do it right?

and i may skip the liquid cooling.. turns out it's overkill. ?

I highly recommend that you stay away from liquid cooling, it's fairly dangerous if not dealt with by expert hands...
