So, if I switch, do I need to change anything else?

I tried doing it it and it didnt work, I have an old DELL 2350, bought an ASUS MOBO and didnt fit in there, might as well get a new CASE and salvage some of the parts from your DELL PC( memory, cdrw, cdrom, monitor, and some of your external hardware) and also your CPU.

A Dell is a Dell and will alweys be a Dell...Dell build's their machines to be a Dell and stay a Dell...Just too proprietary...Just call Dell, they will tell u they can sell u an upgrade though...........

sell the dell... but a new decent comp.. just about anything is better than DELL (that isnt name brand, gateway - emachine - compaq - etc)!! LoL

Dell PC can be upgraded(memory, cpu, videocard via pci slot and soundcard)but you would just be wasting your time and effort because later on you would be wanting a faster PC, so my advice is keep your DELL and build youself a new one that would satisfy you.

the reason i wanted to change motherboards was basically to house a better graphics card.

is this PCI card any good?

CHAINTECH nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Video Card, 256MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, PCI, Model "P-FX20" -RETAIL

Get a Radeon 9200SE PCI version....And it is express and you can put it in a normal PCI slot :) that's what I had to do.

get a asus ge force 6800 i think the 128mb one is a pci and u cant go wrong with a geforce nvida one of the most respectable g card manufacturers

1. The only "Dell" thing from a dell system is the Mobo. The CPU is still intel. So you can swicth the core out and pop it onto a new mobo as needed. You need to get a new case most likely tho

2. The ASUS GeForce6800 is NOT a PCI card

3. The ASUS GeGorce6800 is NOT a 128MB card.

4. NVidia does NOT make video cards. They make the chips. ASUS, while highly respected, has made either a very VERY wise or incredibly stupid move with regards to their V9999Gamer/V9999GT cards. Take a closer look at the prices and specs to see.

5. PCI-express is something you find on Socket775 mobos. Since you have a Socket478 that wont be a concern for you. AGP is your route :)

hmm.. i still say u should sell the Dell.. and buy a Athlon XP machine with some decent runnin parts in it.. dont go under 512MB PC3200 for ur RAM.. but i say thats ur best bet.. cuz the only way ur gonna be able to upgrade ur dell (outside of dells upgrades) is to just buy all new hardware and put in the case.. which is kinda pointless.. id just buy a new decent runnin PC...

He has a new MOBO, why bother installing a new VC on your DELL, save it for a new case, and salvage your old parts from your DELL PC like I said and youll save enough to buy a decent VC for your new MOBO.

I believe ASUS makes a X800 and not a gforce 6800...

Will that Windows that is prolly special for Dell work on another MOBO....it has extra software that wont work but I was wondering about windows since Dell is so proprietary

Here's what I did. I have an HP and it's pointless to try an upgrade it. I built myself a new computer and I don't regret it.
