want to change OS from 98 to XP

I had a gateway computer which I sold. I just found the OS disc for that computer. It doesn't have a key printed on the package(not sure if it came with one). I also have a newer computer that was my mother's. That computer has windows 98 (preference only). It can hold windows XP. Can I put the OS disc that was on the other system on her system and change over from 98 to winXP? I hate to just get rid of the discs.

No.

The OEM discs that came with the computer are custom tailored to run on that specific hardware.

OEM discs are not made to be installed on more than one machine.

It might work though. Just give it a try. Put the disc in your computer and see if it gives u an upgrade option.

It works I've done it, but doesnt also work, Sometimes it screws up because it will install drivers for hard ware you dont have and go crazy. Just make sure to back up all important data before trying it.
