Ok my budget is around $120 and im leaning towards the 4830 instead of the 9800GT because benchmarks and other people are saying that the 4830 is alittle better in framerates but destroys the 9800GT when it comes to overclocking.

Heres what i've found
ASUS HD 4830 GDDR3 512mb
$114

Apollo HD 4830 GDDR4 512mb
$122

The apollo verison is gddr4 but has a 200mhz slower mem clock than the asus but i could probably overclock the apollo manually to the same speed anyway right? but the thing that worries me is that i've never heard of apollo and newegg and google dont have any reviews for this card.

You think i should just go with the GDDR4?

Also, i only have a 300watt psu but my comp is not high end
Specs:
Lakeport Intel i945G Mobo
P4 3.0ghz HT 630 (people say this proc uses alot of power kinda worried)
2x1GB Kingston 533mhz
Liteon dvd player

Nothing is overclocked and i dont plan to, do you think that i could get away with using a 300 watt. i just dont have the budget to replace my psu just yet

What do you mean?

the 630 is really outdated but still delivers... its not like im putting a GTX 295 in

yes but it will bottleneck your GFX card a lot.

Get the GDDR3 version

I have never heard of GDDR4, so they either changed the reference design, or its a typo.

Get the ASUS

I suggest you save up a little more and get a 4850. Or borrow some money quick.

Its far better for only a little more money.

i suggest buying a used 8500 and saving up for a new proc. i had a p4 3.0 and an 8500. then i got a 4870 and the bottleneck was so severe i didnt see a rise in fps in games.

its been awhile since i've looked at new pc hardware. i dont understand how the prescott is a bottleneck.. Are you trying to say the hd 4830 has a more advanced processing scheme?

im saying you would barely see a difference between an 8500gt and a gtx295. prescott is old news. i got my c2d and my superpi time was a third what it was for p4 3.0. and my source framrates went from 50fps to 250fps.

P4 + 8500gt = 45fps

P4 + 4870 = 50fps

C2D + 4870 = 250 fps

P4 is old...

You have to get a Core 2 Duo at least (Which I think is also a new Motherboard, good thing is they cheap (P45/35 etc)

I would get the GFX card, but at the same time, get yourself a new processor...

dude i have a 6600 right now and my cs:s rates are at 80-100fps (on high aa 4x af 4x) and i know that if it wasnt for the cpu overhead i dont think it would be that high..

is there a universal bottleneck list i dont know about?

... 6600 and p4 are probably equally matched so you should upgrade both of them when you can. personally i would upgrade the cpu first because that will help all aspects of your computing not just games.
