Hello all. I'm ready to order the parts for my new rig, but I'm a little worried about compatability issue's. So far, I know I want an Intel CPU Core2 E6600 and a Nvidia 8800 GTX 728 video card with 2 gig's of ram. I could use a little help on the rest of the part's as far as compatability with the motherboard (and which mb to get? ). If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate links as this is my first build. I'm looking for a price around $2,000. Any and all thing's you'll think I'll need as I'm going to place the order tomorrow. Thx guys.

Guys, can you explain the choice of MB and first hard drive? This is first time I start understanding reason for two harddrives: one should be fast (and expensive) but may be small for OS, second -- just data storage among cheaper 3.0 GB, am I right?

Looks good Victor thx. How about a floppy/optical? Do I need them? I was told the OS boots from the floppy?

I do not think so. OS is not being booted from flopy for already 12 years, I think..

DVD looks good from reviews, I wonder what more experienced people think of it

Maineak, could you fix the link for the optical? When I click it I get the video card. Also, do I need a floppy and dvd drive?

I fixed it.

An optical drive is the CD/DVD reader/burner. It's called an optical drive sometimes because it uses a laser (light) to read and write, and optical meaning of or pertaining to light. Hence, it's called (sometimes) an optical drive. No, the OS boots from either a CD or DVD when installing it, and from the harddrive once it's installed.

I chose the mobo I chose because it has a 680i chipset, and I've heard excellent things about evga's motherboards, especially in higher-end systems. As for harddrive, the small one for storage has a faster RPM, so that data can be accessed faster, speeding up loading times for Windows and other applications. The second drive is for storage...it doesn't matter if it's SATA II (3.0 GB/s).
