Want to upgrade an old computer

I have a 14 year old dell pc and i want to upgrade it because its really slow and i cant play any modern videogames. But i don't know what components it is compatible with since its so old.
Here are its spec's:

system:
windows xp
home edition
version 2002
service pack 3

Dell vostro_200
Intel[R]Core[TM]2Duo CPU
E4400 @ 2.00GHz
2.00 GHz, 0.99 GB GB of RAM

I know how to upgrade it and change the parts but i want to know what i should buy to improve its speed and video performance. i just need enough power to be able to stream on twitch it and for videogames because currently i cant do those things on my dell pc. Any help would be much appreciated.

You could gut the case and replace everything in it but you're better off just building or buying a new machine.

It would make a lovely doorstop though. Those old PC cases were sturdy, so ideal for a doorstop. :)

Until you jam your toe on it^. We use an old PS3 as the doorstop in my dorm room, and those aren't light.

Yeah that machine is essentially useless. I have machines 5 years newer than that in my basement collecting dust. Nothing in that would be upgradeable enough to make it functional for games.

That would probably be the sexiest doorstop ever Darren :P I love those old PS3s. I've always wanted one, since the day they were released.

It's definitely not 14 years old if the specs you posted are correct, Core2 CPUs came out in 2006 (I think). It's still too old for any meaningful upgrades, though, but it's probably new enough to have PCI-E (check first). If so, you could chuck in a new graphics card, which could help a lot depending on the kind of games you play, and you can reuse it when you do decide to build a new machine.

With only 1GB of RAM, I'm not too optimistic, though, but if you could find some old RAM for really cheap or even free, it might be able to handle less demanding games decently. What games do you (want to) play?

Yeah, I noticed that too. Is it 14 years old or not? I would say no. You can probably get a good $60 for it off Craigslist. It's just not worth it to upgrade.

if you can't update the Mem, i would install Mint 17.1 Rebeca XFCE along side with win XP and just use it for web browsing and streaming. I have an old Vaio Laptop Pemtium M, Intel 1.5 GHZ non PAE CPU with Winxp sp3 and installed Linux Mint 17.1 XFCE along side WinXP and use it for Video Streaming and surf the web,and use Win xp for aplications that you trust and disconnect Win Updates,

this is the answer i am looking for! everyone is telling me to build a new computer but i want to make it work. it has too much history for me to sell it, all i really want it to to is to be able to stream on twitch and play certain video games like path of exile, infestation survivor stories, h1z1, world of tanks. i can already play diablo 2 on it. those games have low requirements but im not sure how much ram i should buy and what graphics card. I'm not trying to play big games like chrysis and arma 3.

Q9400 - $10
4GB Ram - $20

Got a link?

Q9400 is usually like $30. I'd be surprised if you could get a decent 2x2GB for $20 as well.

If OP was on a super budget even Microcenter has bundles like a 6400K+Motherboard for $45.

A better approach would probably be the OP stating "I have X amount of dollhairs, what is my best option here?" and then we could discuss.
