I have a 7 year old pc with a genuine copy of windows xp home installed on it. Thing is, to install on it you use 2 recovery cd's. So now i have a more modern pc, I want to run a genuine version of xp on that one and get rid of my old un. Of course the recovery discs just kick up errors due to different components and crashes. The old machine has it's genuine number on it so how will i get xp home to work on my new pc? I don't have a cd with xp on just the old recovery discs. Will microsoft send me 1 for a small fee? Or will moving hard drive to my new computer work?

No, the OEM that came with the other computer is tied to that one and can't be transferred to a new computer. Well can't is big word, I dont belive in can't. But thats another story.

You can run it on another pc if you have uninstalled it. Once you install it put cd key in for the new pc you will need to activate windows you can call them write the numbers u see on the activation screen and they will tell you the key to write in the blank bar and u have your windows activated.

what you do is uninstall windows from the current PC. Then find a copy of an OEM XP disc and install using that. That disc will allow you to install windows with that product key.

That's how we're able to reload machines at work.

Listen you all, he has 7 year old computer with windows preinstalled with recovery cd's. Chances are its a dell/sony or HP something. If he uses the pin on the case to install it on another computer microsoft isnt going to reactivate it. He is going to have to buy another key or a new CD.

All software bundled with a computer including all OEMs and preloaded applications are bound to that machine and that machine only. That is standard amongst almost all EULAs.

I used to work for a certified MS system's builder. If someone purchased OEM office with their machine and returned it, we couldn't (legally) take office off and resell it. We had to sell that computer with Office from here on in.

Be nice if what voyagerfan99 & sokol have said works but get a feeling stranglehold & tlarkin probably have a point. By OEM, you mean an out of box license? May just have to try it.
