I have an old emachines T3656 that still works great. I looked up the mobo info:

Elitegroup 945GCT-M3
Socket 775
FSB 800Mhz

I found links to elitegroup's website and checked for supported processors. I've been looking at a Core 2 Duo E4700 for quite some time now and wanted to know if that would be compatible with my motherboard?
It didn't list on the website that E4700 is supported but did list E4600.

Specs for E4700:
Socket LGA 775
FSB 800 MHz
2mb cache

Based on that, it should fit, right?

I wouldn't risk buying a processor that won't work. The E4600 has almost the exact same processing power as the E4700. I would go with the Core 2 Duo E4600 Processor. If the company says their motherboard will work with the processor it should work.

When companies suggest a product, it's best to buy it. It gives you a large cushion if anything goes wrong.

Ok, when I looked up the mobo specs it says support up to E4400 which is what I'll get.
Does that mean I can keep the same heatsink? It's hard to find a brand new one so I might have to settle for an OEM E4400 and it doesn't come with heatsink.

The heatsink you presently have should work fine with the new processor. I would buy some thermal paste though if you don't have any.
