Hey I never owned a laptop before but I want one, I have quite alot to ask.

1) What is the best reliable laptop out? So I won't need to buy a new one in the future? I'm looking at intense gaming, and music production.

2) Can I upgrade internals for laptops like computers? Like memory, CPU, HDD, GFX card?

3) What are the cons of a laptop?

4) Can I leave my laptop on 24/7 like I do with my computer?

5) What is the life-span for laptops? Computers last forever, unless some hardware dies, but can be replaced, how about laptops, same thing or need to buy a whole new laptop?

This is from my limited knowledge of computers.
1) I feel ASUS is a good brand, but if you want the best I hate to admit it Alienware does make good(over priced) laptops.
2) CPU, I don't believe so. HDD, you can hook up external hard drives. GPU, no you cannot upgrade.
3) I don't believe you can overclock, but wouldn't work to well because it would over heat. They have limited upgradeableility .
4) You should, as long as your room isn't 130 degrees.
5) I belive they will work forever, but would be obsolete after 6 or 7 years.

1: MacBook Pro hands down is the most reliable. In 2006 the only big plague were power supplies but have been since fixed. Perhaps that intel buzzing noise but bah only happened for 1 month back in 06. As for intense gaming, not soo much maybe the new ones will have a good card but for music production best choice with logic studio.

2: You can upgrade: Memory, Hard Drive, Usually take an optical drive out and the battery

3: Heat, Non graphics card/CPU upgrades. Tends to break down more rather than desktops. Laptop drives unless Mac laptops have no Sensors built in so theres a big chance the plate on the hard drive will clash. (Macs have a SMS sensor built in so once theres a sudden movement the hard drive parks the head etc)

4: I leave my computer on sometimes overnight. Never a desktop because it's 40 CM beside my bed and is like a airplane taking off but my laptop tends to cool down if just doing the nasty (torrenting*)

5: Laptops tend to have a 3-4 year life cycles. The Macs battery can have upto 1000 cycles which is on average 5 years. Some macs can last upto 7 years in terms of Upgrading OSes etc but a iBook G3 Clamshell for example can still be found on the net working. Probably the same with PCS too. I saw a windows 98 laptop in a hospital in action so with a little T&C it can go a long way

Mac, Asus, and toshiba. Not sure about alienware, they were bought by dell which is crap but they could still be same quality. Alienware and mac are pretty much out for intense gaming due to price (if you have over 2 grand you could reconsider an alienware with SLI). For the past year or so Asus has had the best gaming laptops for the money. Mine cost $1100 last spring.

Depends on the laptop. On a gaming laptop, you usually can upgrade all of that. Sometimes, you can't upgrade the gpu on lesser laptops but im 90% sure all gaming laptops can be fairly easily upgraded. That doesn't mean in 4 years a new gpu will use the same port type, though that's the same with desktops.

3) What are the cons of a laptop?
Price (for gaming). Not really anything else. You can get a laptop that can max out crysis if you want, but it'll likely be twice the cost of a desktop.

Funny thing is best buy sells laptops for a little over $300 which makes them cheaper than their cheapest desktop so if you need a basic computer laptops are cheaper.

4) Can I leave my laptop on 24/7 like I do with my computer?
Sure. I like to turn off the option that makes it sleep when the lid is closed so the screen isn't always out. You can do that in window's battery settings.

5) What is the life-span for laptops? Computers last forever, unless some hardware dies, but can be replaced, how about laptops, same thing or need to buy a whole new laptop?
I feel laptops can have a bit more trouble. They tend to be more easily spilled on than a desktop that's safely under your desk and people drop their laptop bags/backpacks hardly etc. If you take care of it and it's a good company it'll last a very long time. If you usually game in one place, you could consider a usb keyboard to put less wear on your laptop since obviously it's more expensive to replace the laptop keyboard over buying a usb for your desktop.

By that you're saying that laptop live for only 3-4 years then you have to buy a new laptop? Or are you talking about the battery?

Batteries usually aren't good within 3-4 years, but it depends on how much you use it. My laptop battery is a year old but like new since I rarely use it. People that always just use their battery everywhere tend to have a decent difference within a year.

Laptop internals are no different than desktops - if it's good quality it will last a very long time.

OH i meant the battery can last upto 1000 charges and thats around 5 years. and after the 1000 charges it will still operate but the life will decrease.

1. i used acer for about a year and it's quite good no problem so far
2. i had upgrade my memory from 1 GB to 2 GB
3. none
4. you should use a cooling pad/ usb fan when you run it 24/7 otherwise it will get hot.
5. i just got my laptop for a year so i'm not capable to answer this :D

thanks
