War Rock : First Impressions [long review]

Hi,

Today I played a game called War Rock which was recommended to me by Nevakonaza. At first I was hesitant because I didn't know if my PC would be able to run it. I reformatted today and decided to download it. After a quick download from the 2nd mirror, I installed and while it was updating I made my account on the WarRock.net site.

The registration system on WarRock.net is very Nazi-like. Your user name must have letters and numbers, your password must have letters and numbers, your nick name must be all lower case, and just to make things more confusing you have to decide 3 out of 8 or so random security questions and then make an answer for them (if you forget your password I'm guessing you'd have to choose the 3 questions from the list).

I finally got logged in and went to change my settings from High (default) to Low, but then decided to leave it alone and bump it down until I got a manageable FPS. The lobby system was weird to put it nicely.. And the lobby chat reminded me of CS:S. You ask a question about a button command and you'll get 1 helpful answer, 8 people telling you to Google it, and the rest of them telling you to hit F10, Alt + Tab, F10 + Ctrl, etc etc.

Once I got in, my jaw really dropped. The graphics looked gorgeous from the last time I'd seen them (early early beta, where you had to translate a Korean page just to download). It seemed as if my FPS was 500. Once in-game, War Rock quickly let me know that it has a fast pace because I was killed 5 times in like 15 seconds while I tried to figure out how to type. Once I got moving though, it was hard to keep my focus on whats going out while I admired the graphics.

There is one thing I cannot describe , and that is the gameplay. It is just so FUN. Rolling and dolphin diving (ala BF2) and shooting and injecting myself with steroids .. It's not innovative gameplay, it's just fun. By the end of the round I came out as 2nd with 21 kills and 10 deaths. When I asked questions like how to stand up from prone and how to run, I was greeted with "lol"s but once they found out I was serious people would generally help out.

I give this game a 9/10.

My rating would probably be lower if I wrote this review 5 days from now and had a chance to experience the bugs, glitches, and exploits Nevakonaza mentioned but this is just a first impression review.

Final thoughts: I don't know HOW this game got a 5.5/10 from Gamespot. They either reviewed this in the early early Beta or the rating they give to games co-relates with how much the publisher bribes them. I know some games that they gave 9.3s that deserved 5's.. This game should definitely be at the top of your list if you're looking for a new multiplayer FPS. I got a bigger rush from just rolling past machine gun fire than any rush I've had from video games.

P4 3.0GHz | 512MB PC3200 | Radeon 9550 128MB | WarRock is installed on my Raptor 10,000RPM SATA

Note - The reason for the great FPS was because I was on the infantry only mode.. It would probably be lower on the vehicle modes.
Have fun.. I sure will. :D

omgah!! wow it's a huge post.

Its a realy good game,And addictive:D

Im usualy on CQC....you rank up & gain more in game Dinar that way.

I think alot of people will find this review helpfull and attract more people to play it which is great.

I tend to look at pc.ign.com most of the time when I'm looking for a review on a game, sometimes some other sites, but not often. Mostly I look at a comparison between the readers average and the reviewers average. If its close I'll pay pretty close attention, but if not, then I'll take it with a grain of salt.

*EDIT: One additional note, ign rated this game and wrote the review in it's initial form, pre-patched. So a few of the glitches they mention may not be there anymore...

Yeah, thats what I mean. GameSpot went over bugs that weren't there anymore.

Anyways today is my 2nd day of playing and I still get a sense of pride with each kill I make.. Reminds me of my newbie BF2 days.

to me when i played this i thought i was playing counter strike 1.6 and battlefield 2 at the same time. CSS is still way better than this even if you can fly a helicopter or shoot a rocket.

That's your opinion. But to me CS:S is boring and old. Everyone uses a M4A1 or a AK and everyone goes to the same spots over and over again..
