Was it a virus issue?

I've been travelling to Asia the past month and had been using hotel Wifi to check news and emails. A couple of times, after logging in about a few minutes, my keyboard and mouse disappeared rendering the laptop useless. It would come back briefly and disappear again. Initially I though that it was a driver issue and I remove the driver and reinstalling the newest version (it said I had the latest version), and it didn't fix it.

Then I suspected that it was a virus problem and ran AVG and Malwarebyte (an obsolete version) and it fixed it.

It came back again a day later and again I ran the antivirus software and it was fixed again. Then I moved around other countries and cities and it didn't recur.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Do you think it was a virus attack? And why it only affected the keyboard/mouse?
2. My Malwarebyte is outdated and it requires me to pay for the update? Is they any way to extend the free version, or it is time for me to make the contribution to get the latest version?

Malwarebytes is free to use, not sure what your problem is. Open malwarebytes and click on end free trial to the far right of realtime protection. Then click on update to get the latest definitions and scan your pc.

If you're in Asia you might wanna check out vpn.ac and use the ECC or XOR protocol with port 443 so that the "great firewall" won't block you all the while keeping your Internet secure. Also. Manually add the Google or OpenDNS DNS IP addresses in your WIFI adapter. OpenDNS is 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. A little something I learned about visting DEFCON. ;)

Right now I use Bitdefender Free. So that could help keep things at bay.

I was having a hell of a time where Google was blocked by China internet. Does vpnac let me by-pass that?
I don't know if my Windows 10 firewall was on. I have AVG Free and I guess it might have been turned off. Does BitDefender Free let you have the Windows firewall on?
 
Go to the website vpn.ac and read about how they can get past China's filters.

No, Bitdefender Free does not provide a firewall. It's just an anti-virus App. I never used 10, but if it has a control panel where the Windows Firewall was always found, be sure to go there and make sure the firewall is indeed on. It's not the best, but could help.

Wouldn't hurt to use those OpenDNS IPs I listed either that you can manually enter into your WIFI card settings.

I read somewhere on their site that in China you should use the XOR or ECC protocol and use port 443. This will mimic regular SSL traffic, so they can't filter it.

What I like about vpn.ac is that their client is pretty much stand alone. And they have a Firefox proxy extension for their customers if you just want to have browsing proxied and not other Apps on your computer.

Or if you have a DD-WRT flashed router use their config and VPN the whole enchilada! LOL But that could be an issue in certain circumstances. I just use the client.
