Water Damaged iPod. Help?

(This is my friends) Alright, hes got an 30 gig iPod video. For a few months he was having trouble with the battery taking a change, it eventually died and never powered on again. But, I believe he could still hook it up to his computer and it powered on. Recently he somehow spilled water on it. He took it apart, and the two foam pieces had soaked up some water. There is a lot of information on this hard drive that he needs!

Thoughts and ideas so far...

Try to power it up with a new/different battery?
Is there any way to get some kind of external adapter to hook up JUST the hard drive to a USB port?


Any info or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
 
DRY IT OUT FAST AND TAKE OF THE BATTERY FAST it should still work if you can dry it out quiclky

Agreed with the drying it out part, or you can get a 1.8" HDD case, which should come with the appropriate adapter.

Forgot to mention that the adapter I linked to requires you have the knowledge to open your PC and plug it into an IDE lead, as well as a 4pin molex.. pretty simple, but thought I'd mention it.

take out the battery and get a hair dryer and put it on medium heat and dry it Thoroughly(you need to heat it up until you cant touch it) happened to me with my phone lol
 
Don't speed the drying. Just take it apart as much as possible and let it air dry for a few days.
 
no. i dont think so. it is going to be hard to find one to work

also can you get a close up of the pins? so like a side view

edit your NEVER going to get a a ipod to usb hard drive kit. your better off drying it and try to get it working again. but i would love to be corrected. the hd to usb converter they were talking about ^^^ is for the oridginal ipod. not the 5g video

Yes, it'll work.. Toshiba makes the 1.8" drives used in ipods, as well as basically everything else that uses a 1.8" HDD. The connections are identical.

The thin pins that stick out on one side of that adapter will poke right into the 1.8" drive's connection, and you'll plug a 4 pin molex (for power) and an IDE cable (for data) into the other end of the adapter.

Either of those will work, they're the same thing.. one is more user friendly as it provides a seat for the 1.8" HDD to rest on while plugged into the adapter.

I failed to mention in my original post that your drive may have a ZIF connection (ribbon cable) if so you'll need this adapter;

I pulled my 5.5g apart and it has the first connection, not zif... if yours has the zif connection, purchase the above type.. you'll know it's zif if it's connected by a ribbon cable to the board in your ipod, rather than stuck to 2 rows of 20 pins.

BTW: This is a 30 gig iPod. It does connect to the board in the iPod via ribbon cable. It looks like those first two you mentioned would work though... Hmm.. according to my picture, what would work the best, if at all? I'm buying this for a friend, so I just want to make sure I get the right one the first time! Thanks guys! You've been great!
 
The ribbon cable would work for that model HDD.

Also, PM me if, once you get your DATA, you want to sell that HDD.. I've been looking for a 1.8" to experiment on :D
