WD My Passport ext. drive is locked

I say forget it.

The last thing you can try is booting back into Windows and run that WDQuickformat.exe. Otherwise there's nothing else you can do.

In Windows 10, the WD drive shown as a CD (WDlucker) as F:
In disk manager, the larger partion was not given a drive letter and cannot be assigned. So I can run it from windows.

So even using the Ubuntu Live CD, you can't access it?! Linux typically blows all MS security stuff away since they are separate systems.

Try Installing Ubuntu to the Drive and see what happens. You can always delete/format it after the fact.

Ubuntu could not fix the problem. But it was a good exercise that let me experience ubuntu. I am quite impressed with the feel and touch. Maybe one day I can download it to one of my machine.

But I did find a way to format and erase the drive. I first went into Device manager to disable the Virtual CD. Then I went on WD's site to update the firmware. It as the password and I keep putting something in. After a few times, it gave me an option to erase the drive, which I did.

Now I see the WD as just another drive on my USB connection.

Thanks.
