I have a 250G WD passport it worked for bout a year. I pluged it into a computer one day an a spark came from the USB port now when i plug it into any computer it spins up the ligh comes on then windows says "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it"
device manager says its an unknown devise, and the properties says "No drivers are installed for this device." ive tried to update the driver it says couldn't find a better match than the driver software already installed.
Is there a way to get this working again?
If not is it possible to get the data off it?

I doubt that spark did anything; USB doesn't provide too much power and I'm not sure it could burn out the controller chip (correct me if I'm wrong anyone). My first tip would be- try a new USB cable that is rated the same (cheaper or other purpose cables may not support the correct data/power bandwidth).
Worst come to worst, there are data recovery specialist companies that can pull all of the data off of a dead HDD, assuming it was some kind of electrical problem and not physical (if the platter is smashed, there will be no recovery!).
