WD Raptor Hard Drive

Hmm. I have the 150GB Raptor X (the one with the window). My Windows XP load time with an AMD FX-64 Windsor core @3.0GHz, and 2GB of Corsair Dominator @ 800MHz 4-4-4-12-2T is around 30 seconds between the time I press the power button and the time I can load Call of Duty 4.

I think that's plenty fast. THAT's where the Raptor drives shine...not in loading levels, but in loading programs, moving large files, and starting Windows up quick.

Furthermore, they're ridiculously reliable. I've had mine for about 5 months now, and in that time I had my supplemental mobo power cord come loose while running Windows, causing a string of restarts and failures. No data corruption. Had something wonky happen when I was pushing my RAM after OC'ing the Windsor, the manual-set mobo voltage wouldn't deliver the power it was set to ("Auto" worked fine at whatever I wanted). Caused a series of restarts and BSODs after Windows loaded. No data corruption. Anywhere.

hell yea man, you made a GREAT choice,. I was always one of those people who thought i would never feel a diffrence. but its huge. I really value having my computer be the first to load the new map. and load everything in windows lightning fast. it complement my processor nicely!.. you wont be disapointed.

I decided to un raid my raptors to see how one feels, and while its faster than my old drive its not lightning fast like the 2 in raid. I get my new raptors tommorow cant wait to see what that does!

So you think the two 74 gig raptors will be fine?Or should I save money and buy two 36 gig raptors?

well that had absolutly nothing to do with performance. that is until you get to the last 20% or so, then they start to get cluttered and lose a bit of performance.

What will you be using these hard drives for?..

In my case I use the two raptors as my C: Drive only for my OSS and to install my games and programs on,. I keep all the important stuff (pics, movies, game installers, program installers) on a backup 500 gig hard drive. I reformat about once every 2 months or so.

If your using them to keep data on then its a stupid idea to run raid0. I doubt your doing that,. your going to use it for you OSS like I do.

There is a simple way to decided if you need two 36gig;s or two 74 gigs. Just check you C driver. if you have all your programs and games installed and it totals less than 40 or 50 gigs then I would say that two 36GB raptors will be plenty. If its more than 50 then I would go with two 74gig.

Personally with loads of games and programs install I use less than 35 gigs of space on my C drive so I get away with 36's just fine.
