i have a laptop with a built in webcam is there any way to disable it and use an external cam plugged into usb port

You can use an external without disabling it, but if you go into your device manager you can disable it that way.

Sure

>start..right click my computer>left click manage>left click device manager>left click imaging devices>left click device>click disable

Then plug in your new webcam,restart the computer and let it detect and install the driver.
