Weird FPS on video card

Hi. I put a post up a couple of day ago about my my 8400gs (PCI)( I know its not good for games) that I had purchased recently. Well I put Fraps on and tested out several games and I got weird fames per second on several of the games:
Combat arms (all settings on low with 800x600 res): got from 25-75 fps depending on where I was on the map.
Freestyle Street Basketball (only has one setting) gets from 13-17 fps
Need For Speed Most Wanted demo (setting on medium anti aliasing off, no texture filtering, and 800x600 res) got from 20-29 fps
Sims 2 (settings on mostly medium, some low, running at 800x600) 25-40 fps

I have a dell dimension 3000 and the specs are:
p4 HT @ 3.00 Ghz, 1 gig of ddr (400 mhz) ram, 145 gig hdd, and now the 8400gs graphics card. (and I installed a 350watt psu)
I have already disabled the onboard graphics that the computer previously had. and all my Nvidia drivers are up to date and so is my motherboard.

Can anyone HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM!!!!!???!!!!!

Really because my laptop has an outdated radeon 9600 and gets more fps on all the games so i was just wandering if something was wrong with my card. But I'll take your word for it.

yup linkin is right, the 8400 isn't a gaming card so you will see not very good fps in any game that came out in the last 4 or 5 years or so

Thanks for the reply but one game, freestyle street basketball, was running faster on my intel extreme 2 graphics, so i was just curious if something was wrong with the card.

Yes, a 8600gt would help but it is not nessessary...

WRONG!
That is not normal specs for a 8400gs, its not the best card in the world guys but it is capable of playing the games he posted games on high @1024/768
And sims, it should max it out, or close to it...

Ive had an 8400GS and it preformed good for a lil sucker...
Could max out COD4 at 1440/900(No AA)


OP do you have the latest drivers?

I would overclock that baby, its one of the best cards ever for over clocking, i havent seen a card do better at overclocking than the 8400gs...

I raised
core= 250mhz overclock
memory= 100mhz overclock
shader 400mhz overclock

This is all with stock voltages, with the volt mod, you can get that thing even higher...


But overclocking my card, it was a good thing, i got about 7-10 fps more on each game


To sum it all up, overclock it ;)

Thanks for the advice man, I had overclocked my card but it still performed poorly :( . But what I had noticed is that when I did this 3d test the card would heat up from about 50 degrees C to about 61 degrees C. But when playing games the heat did not increase, which to me means its not running at full speed. If thats the case is there a way to fix this???

Oh and yes I do have the latest drivers for my card which I got from the Official Nvidia website.

I had bought the card about 5 days ago from Microcenter and yes the card is still under warranty, but at first I thought the card might have been faulty because of its slow performance, but when I did some 3d tests on the card it was performing like an 8400gs should be performing, and it only happens when I try to play a game on it. but If I am not able to fix this problem I will return this card and get it replaced for another one.

I couldn't even max out COD2 with my 8500GT which is better than the 8400GS
also remember that his PCI 8400GS is only a 64-bit =/

True, I was just curious because i didn't expect it to run slower than a mobility m10 graphics card (radeon 9600 with only 64mb), which my laptop has.

O srry about your results man lol, 8500gt isnt much better than 8400gs, i beleive they are the same chip any way, g98?...

OP, 50c isnt high at all, these cards can go up to 100c and still be safe, these gfx cards can run pretty damn hot.

When i was gaming, my temps on high were around 87c, idle was about 50c...

Try overclocking the thing if you want some more performance, I'll bet it should OC pretty well, the old cripped cards do usually :)

Just read up, its not really hard at all. I doubt anything is wrong with your card, if its not overheating then its good!
 
Thank you everyone for your replies, I found out what was wrong, well unfortunatly the Dell website did not have the latest chipset drivers, which I thought I had, but when I went to the Intel website to Download the latest drivers the graphics card seems to work fine now.
