So out of the blue i turned on my computer running xp home edition and my all programs list is empty all i get is a box that says list empty. what could have happened?
Sounds possibly like the work of malicious software. We have had some malicious software do this recently in some of the computers we deal with at my work. The software would erase the Program Files menu shortcuts and also hide files. Very annoying.
so i ended up running malwarebytes caught a few things but found that all my files in my C drive were hidden, every single one of them when i clicked to open my c drive it was empty just had to show hidden folders and unhide them all in their properties and problem solved
Unhide is a program that will reverse all of the hidden files in case you missed anything. Be aware that this was almost definitely caused by some sort of malware, so keep an eye out for anything unusual in case Malwarebytes didn't get everything.
I found some malicious software on my Windows XP a little while ago. I wiped the hard drive partition my operating system was installed on and cloned another master drive image of Windows XP to my present drive. That is a sure way you can know you got it all off your hard drive.
Then I shut off the network interface card driver in control panel and pretty much just use my Linux for Internet now.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 is so much more vulnerable to malicious software over Windows 7. I hate Service Pack 3 for XP. I think Microsoft sabotaged it so it will just slow everything down. They want me to run to Windows 7 but I am resisting for now.
